they outlawed this move just because she was the only woman who could do it.
Surya Bonaly was infamous for (among other things) doing aone blade backflip in the 1998 Olympics, and is the ONLY figure skater who’s ever pulled that off. Not just the only woman, the only figure skater PERIOD. There’s like all ofthree Olympic-class male skaters who did backflips in their routines, and NONE of them could do it one blade.
But wait, there’s more.
Backflips were banned from the 1976 Olympics onward on the official justification that skating jumps are supposed to be landed on one blade, whereas backflips are landed on both blades. The unofficial justification was it was too dangerous, both to the athlete and to the rink — if you didn’t land it perfectly, you could not only break your ankle, but also punch THROUGH the ice surface.
Surya Bonaly was openly contemptuous of the figure skating judges, because they were a bunch of openly racist white men who always screwed her over by giving her lower scores than she deserved. That one-blade backflip was her ultimate FUCK YOU! to the Olympics judges, because she took an “illegal” backflip and made it legal by landing it on one blade. Pretty much DARING them to mark her down for being epic awesome and pulling a move that their precious coddled white girls didn’t have the guts to even think about.
They did, of course. White racism knows no bounds. But she utterly owned them with that move.
not only did she do a fucking backflip and land, she landed then went right into a triple loop. like holy fuck
Hey look kids! It’s someone using their own racist agenda to make white people look bad! Not only are the Olympic judges diverse (looked it up..) but also this wasn’t a move used in the Olympic arena! Because of the rules. While not winning a medal in the Olympics (I can’t find any footage of this performance? Winning any medal in the Olympics is awesome though. Like Debbie Thomas did! She is also black.) she won tons of medals in other championships. She is also said to be an awesome gymnast and was better at doing her jumps than most of the figure skating community (no idea if this was the world or just Europe..but still.) Oh don’t get me wrong there is some racism in here. The media and her first manager made up a story that she was adopted on Reunión island. Which is closer to Madagascar. To make her seem more exotic. Same media that likes to blow everything out of proportion in both extremes. Her mom/ second manager put an end to that nonsense. Also her adopted mom was white. They have a very loving bond and work relationship, paving the way of new ideals of figure skating. Because, yes indeed there are a bunch of people in the skating community with sticks in their asses in the skating community. That is the reason behind her attitude. While not much else is known about what she is doing now. I do know Debbie Thomas went back and became an orthopedic surgeon and runs her own practice. That’s awesome.
So yeah in other words it’s great that you bring up this amazing figure skater who is black but don’t bring up white supremacy while doing it. It makes you look like an asshole..
In other words these ladies slay while you sit there and whine. Putting your main focus on racism. Think about that.
I thought they didn’t allow this anymore because it was too dangerous. I highly doubt it had anything to do with her gender or race.
Ugh, that disgustingly patronizing and racist phrase, “Black Excellence”. Jesus Christ, could they be any more idiotic, treating black people like they’re preschoolers who just made their first good grade, patting them on the head with a smug sense of self-worth because they are so “racially minded” or whatever?
We do not need your white guilt, stuff it back up your ass and stop with the “lol black excellence” bullshit. Sheesh.
Agreed. The coolness of this post was totally ruined by the less than subtle white bashing every three seconds too. Also, don’t you have to run your routine by the judges, so that they can deduct points if you don’t stick to it? If that’s the case I’m not sure how she could pull a move that she didn’t tell them about ahead of time and not expect to get points deducted.
