This is a great analogy! Women tend to choose less
profitable college majors (the stairs) than men, and
due to this decision women on average make less
than men (the escalator gets you there faster and
easier). The most profitable college career is
petroleum engineering in which a majority of it's
graduates are men. Whereas the less profitable
ones such as gender studies and art history, are
taken by women. The choice is up to the individual
and what they want. If the woman in this picture
wanted to make $400,000 a year she could take a
job as an engineer or a corporate lawyer, and take
the escalator.
