    Bane, Batman, and Best Friend: GHISTORMSETHEBATMAN
Evening Gothamites! For Father's Day, Thomas Wayne is celebrated but we cannot forget Bruce Wayne's father figure that aided him into becoming the man and hero he is today. Created by Bill Finger, Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson, Alfred Pennyworth is Bruce Wayne's dedicated butler, assistant, best friend and father figure (left panel: Lee Weeks art from Batman Secret Files and Origins 1 (October, 1997) presented). In Pre-Crisis continuity, instead of Pennyworth he was Alfred Beagle, an over-weight clean shaven World War I field medic who by his father's last request wanted to be Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson's butler. Eventually Beagle discovered the Batcave housing a wounded Batman. Beagles medic and intelligence skills were an asset, making him an automatic family member. After William Austin's role in the Batman Black and White Serial, Beagle was changed to Alfred Pennyworth in Detective Comics (Vol 1) 83 (January 1944), returning from a health resort slimmed down with a thin mustache. Alfred was killed in Detective 328 (June 1964) and years later was revived in Detective 356 (October 1966) by scientist Brandon Crawford. In Post-Crisis continuity, Alfred was part of the Wayne family since Bruce was young, being his legal guardian after Thomas and Martha Wayne's death. After this event, he has a large part of being there when Bruce makes a vow to avenge his parent's death. Alfred is there even through the hardest times of Bruce's life, such as his back-breaking experience with the villain Bane and his apparent death against Darkseid. This particular loss of his "son" can be seen in Judd Winick's Batman (Vol 1) 687 from August 2009 (right panel: Alex Ross cover to issue 686 presented), part of the Batman R.I.P series after the death of Bruce Wayne. Continuing to be at his side in The New 52 and comics - media today, we commemorate both Thomas Wayne and Alfred Pennyworth for Father's Day, raising Bruce Wayne the man and Batman the hero. Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger and first appearing in Detective Comics (Vol 1) 33 from 1939, Thomas Wayne was a successful surgeon and respected patron of Gotham City, keeping alive the Wayne family name with the ownership of Wayne Manor and head of Wayne Enterprises. Married to socialite and philanthropist Martha Wayne, they had a son, Bruce, and at his young age, he faced Thomas and Martha's untimely death at the gun of mugger Joe Chill. Although established 78 years ago that his death would spawn the shadowy vigilante of Gotham City, the character of Thomas Wayne represented more than just that sole purpose. Thomas Wayne is shown as an influence past his tragic death in Finger's Detective Comics (Vol 1) 235 from September 1956 in "The First Batman" (panel 2) when Thomas' 'Bat-Man' costume inspires Bruce to track down Lew Moxon, the man who hired Joe Chill to kill his parents. As this classic tale was retold in Len Wein and Jim Aparo's "The Untold Legend of the Batman" from 1980 (panel 3), more modern stories told of Thomas as a brilliant surgeon aiding crime master Carmine Falcon in Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's 13 arc epic "Batman: The Long Halloween" from 1997 (panel 4) and as a guide to Bruce in spirit. Thomas' most thrilling role has been as the Batman, established in Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert 2011 arc "Flashpoint" and Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso's 3 issue side storyline "Batman: Knight of Vengeance" (panel 5). In this alternate timeline, Bruce is murdered in front of Thomas and Martha Wayne, driving Thomas into the lethal and vengeful Batman and Martha going insane and taking up the persona of The Joker. Good afternoon Gothamites and have a fantastic Friday! On this day (June 16) in Batman history, two live action Batman films had its world premiered and debuted in theaters in the U.S.! The first is the 1992 film "Batman Returns" which premiered 25 years ago at the @chinesetheatres in Hollywood (it hit U.S. theaters June 19)! The commercial success of Tim Burton's 1989 film 'Batman' spawned a sequel live action movie in 1992. Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne - Batman reprises his role in "Batman Returns", going up against the corrupt business tycoon Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) who joins Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin (Danny DeVito) in order to take over Gotham City and defeat the Batman. But when Shreck's ex-assistant Selina Kyle (Michelle Pfeiffer) transforms into the seductive Catwoman, Batman has to also combat his romantic feelings for the femme fatale. Known for its dramatics from the set design to the costumes, "Batman Returns" was darker than its predecessor, the gothic tone courtesy of Batman co-creator Bob Kane as creative consultant, calling back to his character's origin from 1939. Tim Burton's 1992 sequel film "Batman Returns" was a blockbuster success. However, due to the dark tones of the film, it was not accepted by parents of young children and some sponsorship was turned down in terms of toys and merchandising.
