Board of Education Case Ended Segregation in Schools, Dies Rest in Power, LindaBrown! 💓✊🏾🙇🏾‍♀️ • • • Linda Brown Thompson, who as a young girl was the student at the center of the landmark Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education that declared school segregation unconstitutional, has died in Topeka, Kansas. She was 76. The Peaceful Rest Funeral Chapel in Topeka confirmed it is handling funeral arrangements for Brown. Born in 1943, Brown was in third grade in 1950 when she was denied admission to an all-white elementary school in her hometown of Topeka. She lived 20 blocks from her segregated school, but just five blocks from the all-white school. Kansas schools at the time were segregated by state law. Brown's father, Rev. Oliver Brown, sued the school district in 1951. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) took up the case, which was combined with segregation suits against school districts in other states when it came before the Supreme Court. Future Supreme Court justice ThurgoodMarshall was the lead attorney for the NAACP. In a unanimous ruling in 1954, the court declared school segregation an unconstitutional violation of the 14th Amendment's guarantee of equal protection under the law. The ruling, written by Chief Justice Earl Warren, struck down the "separate but equal" doctrine that had served as the basis for segregation of public facilities since the 1896 case Plessy v. Ferguson. "Sixty-four years ago a young girl from Topeka brought a case that ended segregation in public schools in America," Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer told the Topeka Capital-Journal. Anaconda, Community, and Family: Florida Woman Marries 100-Year-Old Tree To Save lt From Being Chopped Down: "If They Cut Down This Tree, l'm Going To Be A Widow" @balleralert Florida Woman Marries 100-Year-Old Tree To Save It From Being Chopped Down: “If They Cut Down This Tree, I’m Going To Be A Widow” – blogged by @MsJennyb ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In an effort to save a 100-year-old tree, a Florida woman has asked for its branch in marriage. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to The Miami Herald, the tree became part of a neighborhood controversy after Fort Myers city staff discussed chopping it down last year, despite its history in the Snell Family Park. However, after months of planning, the city agreed to a $13,000 spending budget to chop the tree, which in turn, sparked widespread backlash among those fond of the giant ficus. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In fact, one woman took matters into her own hands, using tips from women who’ve been protesting deforestation in Mexico. Over the weekend, Karen Cooper jumped the broom with the tree in an attempt to save it from being cut down. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In a waterfront ceremony that took place on Saturday, Cooper and a slew of other women who were dressed in white vowed to honor and protect the tree. The wedding was filled with the works, including flowers, a tree-decorated wedding cake, and a canine ring-bearer, as it was staged just three days before Tuesday’s meeting about the tree’s fate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since then though, a spokesperson for the city, revealed that it is moving forward to save the beloved tree. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Everyday city employees care for the trees and plants that give our city a sense of community and shared history,” the spokesperson said. However, the tree’s fate is not completely secure just yet, Cooper says. Tuesday will be the determining factor, and if the Beautification Board does not agree to save the tree, the city’s councilman vowed to bring the issue to City Council. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "If they cut down this tree, I'm going to be a widow," Cooper said.

The interview mentioned a lot of projects we can expect to see from Diddy in the near future, including the new app that he and ‪Jay-Z‬ want to develop to connect consumers to black-owned business. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He stated, "My culture… I want to be an authentic, unapologetic warrior for black culture and the culture of the street and how it moves. My thing is most importantly to change the narrative of the black race. I can't relate to anything that isn't about that.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There wasn’t much mentioned about the app’s name, release date, etc. Yet, Brother Love let up lightly about the apps projected function. When you open it, you will be able to search any city for black-owned or black-friendly business for you to patronize. Like a digital directory. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He goes on to clarify, saying, "This is not about taking away from any other community… We'll still go to Chinatown. We'll still buy Gucci! But the application will make it possible for us to have an economic community. It's about blacks gaining economic power.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Looking forward to seeing how the app works and what kind of businesses you will be able to find once you explore its search engines.

You can find an organization within your community, or you can even volunteer online, through websites that will allow you to help for even a few minutes at a time. ✔️Small acts of kindness can go a long way in making the world a better place. Think about a time when someone did something unexpected for you that brightened your day. Weren’t you a nicer person for the rest of the day because of that? ✔️Foster an animal. This can be such a rewarding experience. If you’re able to part with the foster animals, they leave a hole in your heart, but fostering your next pet helps fill it, and you will be making a difference in the lives of so many animals in need. ✔️Make your purchases support your values. Every purchase you make supports something. You can either support a large business that exploits people, animals, and the environment, or you can buy items that are local, organic, or fair-trade. It’s hard to change this all at once, especially if you’re used to shopping for bargains, but try changing just a few of your purchases to make them better reflect the things you value. - Just a few things-ideas for all of you! Africa, Community, and Empire: Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan Looking to Bring The Story of Mansa Musa to Life @balleralert Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan Looking to Bring The Story of Mansa Musa to Life-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ With the success of their first three projects: “Fruitvale Station,” “Creed” and “Black Panther”, super Director Ryan Coogler and Hollywood Star Michael B. Jordan are already teaming up for more projects. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ According to multiple reports, the duo is now looking to start a project centered around the life of Mansa Musa. Both Coogler and Jordan feel it is important to create influential films that reflect the Black community and the contributions that have been made throughout history. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “You got to tell stories in today, or in the future,” says Jordan. “Or can we go back even further? There’s always one period that people want to go back to, but can we go back to Hannibal? Or Mansa Musa, destroying economies as he traveled? Can we go back to the Egyptians?” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Mansa Musa was an influential African ruler in the fourteenth century. He was emperor of the Mali Empire, a land filled with gold, which he casually handed out during his religious expedition to Mecca, ultimately causing economic crises to cities that were unfamiliar with such wealth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ In 1324, Musa became the first Muslim ruler to trek almost four-thousand-miles. During his travels, he encountered rulers of the Middle East and Europe, which helped to put Mali on European maps. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ He helped improve Islamic education and he also brought back government bureaucrats and architects. With the development of mosques and a major university, the city of Timbuktu became more urbanized. Musa ruled for 25 years and during that time, Western Africa was said to be at peace. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ While there is no word on when this project will take off, the duo is already in pre-production for another film titled “Wrong Answer,” about a 2006 standardized testing scandal in Atlanta. The sequel to “Creed” is also on the way.
