Doing Math: I knew when by 15 months my son knew all of his upper and lower case letters, could identify them anywhere, and all of their phonetic sounds, animals, colors, shapes, numbers, body parts, etc and then was a self taught reader at age 2. Actually reading new books, not memorized books or sight word memorization. By the time he was 3 he was reading and doing math at a first grade level, could count beyond 100, skip count by 2,3,5,10, knew 3D complex shapes and patterns etc. Loved to play chess. By age 4 he was reading at a 4-5th grade level and doing 4-5th grade math all self taught. My other son was the exact same way but knew everything my older one did at 15 months at 18 months instead. They also weren't like other kids who were into normal toddler stuff. They preferred to be read to for hours, to read to me, loved and knew loads about space, states and capitals, countries, flags, etc. They had insane attention spans from extremely early on and in a group of peers you could tell they were very different. The things they learned and knew were all self taught or learned through organic play. I never set out to teach them those things nor did I use any sort of curriculum. No, I didn't do anything different for them. I raised them how I would raise any child. They went to play based preschool twice a week through Mother's Day out and at home we just played, read, went to parks, zoos, museums, played loads of board games and with building toys. Nothing out of the ordinary, but the things they played with were meant for much older kids. ... I sent my 5 year old to public kindergarten where he was immediately grade skipped to first grade during the first week of school. It was obvious very shortly after that one grade skip wasn't going to be enough. After watching how miserable he was I pulled him to homeschool. We were reassured that we made the right choice by the psychologist who tested him. He has been homeschooled for 2 years now and is thriving and happy. He is profoundly gifted (tested by licensed psychologist) and I just don't foresee him ever going back to public school because he is 7 years old taking high school algebra this year. That just wouldn't be possible in public school. My 5 yr old joined us to homeschool this year and he too is extremely happy to be homeschooling and thriving. He also works many grade levels ahead across the board so public school and even one grade skip also wouldn't help him. To know for sure if your child is gifted you seek out a licensed psychologist and have them administer an IQ test.
