I'm not an expert and could very much be wrong): 1. The corruption in Buddhist temples is just as bad as any other religion, which tells me there's nothing more spiritual or enlightening about Buddhism than other religions. 2. No. 1 is a very small reason tbh, but the main thing that has made me lose respect for Buddhism is the Thais themselves. The contempt I've seen here for fair play, honesty, integrity, respecting women's bodies, or many other fundamental values that are important to me is quite staggering. This all seems to boil down to a "mai pben rai" attitude that is steeped in the Thai version of Buddhism. It makes sense--in Buddhism this world is full of vanities that distract from a higher enlightenment, so it's easy/convenient to interpret that as meaning "yeah, so, I'm trafficking these kids to work on a shrimping boat, but so what? Nothing in this world matters?" I've seen Buddhists use Buddhism to justify or dismiss treating a lot of people like shit through its eschatology. Christianity and Islam, FWIW, have an eschatology that emphasizes the need to be good to people in this life. That of course doesn't mean people of those religions live up to the values, and it doesn't mean there aren't versions of Buddhism that incorporate that into its eschatology (making merit is an attempt at this, but IMO a weak one) Again, this is out of my expertise so not looking for an argument. Just expressing my POV from my time here. Also, I'm not Christian or Muslim and wasn't raised as either although I'm sure someone's itching to say that. permalink source embed save save-RES parent report give award reply hide child comments Capitalism creates all these things you mentioned, not "Buddhism".
