Enver Hoxha: Ill I E. Hoxha seems to be a person that people in the Marxist community admire, but is that justified? I'll try to present as accurate of sources as I can. • First off, Hoxhaists or Hoxha sympathizers will point out how universities were built and education increased, but 1.) this literally happened in every other Eastern Bloc country, all of which were full of uneducated people before Soviet occupation, and 2.) Soviet occupation, the only reason this happened was because of Soviet presence in Albania, Albania relied on the USSR to provide basic commodities. • Second, yes, in the '50s there was rapid industrialization, but this happened, again, all over the Eastern Bloc, even in places without much Soviet influence. The economies of Eastern Europe under Marxist-Leninist rule aren't the same, in fact, if you refer to my second figure, you'll see the Albanian economy trailed behind other communist states. Yes, trade relations with the USSR deteriorated in 1961 and in the 1970s with Mao, but even before these splits the economy only gradually improved whereas other countries boomed. • Third, back to education, The number of schools, teachers, and students doubled between 1945 and 1950. Illiteracy declined from perhaps 85% in 1946 to 31% in 1950. However education was also sort of managed by the USSR, and many systems lacked freedom of thought, the state decided the curriculum, and violence was constantly used in the schools—albeit it may have been an Albanian way of doing so. Most importantly, Hoxha was a dictator, and a weird one, when the USSR gave Hoxha new plans for collective leadership, he refused (no, saying he wanted to prevent revisionism isn't a good argument, there wasn't much "revisionism" occurring within the party), and he appointed incompetent and undereducated people, and firing squads were a common form of execution. In the 1970s, Hoxha became lonely because he had executed so many party members; Mother Theresa's mother was dying in Albania, she was not allowed to come and pay her a farewell visit even though she begged for it. He could easily have allowed it but, naturally, didn't. — Source: 'Enver Hoxha, The Iron Fist of Albania', by Blendi Fevziu
