this is actually really important and pardon me for doing the cliche reblogging with a caption thing but i want to talk about braids and just how significant they are
to native people (and of course i can’t talk about every native tribe as there are very specific sects and i only really am coming from the perspective of seneca) hair is extremely important as it represents the walking of the Sacred Path as the physical extension of thought and self, and holy men, women and two-spirits are identified through specific styles of dress and even if not holy, the hair shows what a person has participated in, their feelings, their age, whether they are married or not, whether they are in mourning and their tribe
my grandfather is seneca and he had to remove his braids at a very young age and it was an act of assimilation because his mother knew they had to try to be white in order to proceed and it’s a tool of oppression and humiliation to cut (or force to cut) a native american person’s hair for both religious and cultural preservationist reasons
my mom is half-seneca and her choice for me to not cut my hair until i was 13 and for it to be worn in traditional manner was because of this and when i cut my hair then, i cut it off at the base of my head for also this reason; i was diagnosed with depression and was going through therapy, i wanted my hair and my treatment to signify that i was becoming a new, better person– eventually i started dying my hair but that is for separate reasons of colour symbolism and it’s still an important thing to me
please do not invalidate the struggles of other POC, i understand that this happens and it’s horrific to not be able to wear your natural hair, these are also children whose culture and religion is being stripped away from them and they can’t even participate in something so important within their culture simply because of white patriarchal ideas of masculinity

American Indian children (especially plains ndns) were forced to attend boarding schools where they were forbidden to speak their own language and had to cut off their hair and choose a “white” name from the bible. If you refused, the teacher would often ridicule you by ignoring you anytime you attempted to speak or participate in class, to the point of saying offensive, false things about your people to rile you up enough that you gave in and picked a white name so the teacher would let you speak and tell the truth. (This is shown in bury my heart at wounded knee). In fact, it is hard to trace records before the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries bc the govt considered the way native peoples often have several different names that they go by in different context and by different people to be too annoying to record them in a census, another reason they were forced to choose white names. 
Being oppressed for your natural hair and the names you choose is a real thing other poc face and it’s wrong and it’s racist, but this specific post is about what it means to American Indians, and for them it was not only racist stereotyping, but forced assimilation and genocide of their cultures.

 • people who went to residential schools were abused physically, sexually, verbally, and emotionally. my mushum went through all of these until he turned 18 and was allowed to leave
 • boys were not allowed to wear their braids. period. the point of the residential schools was to ‘kill the indian in the child’ and you can google literal before-and-after images of students that the schools would distribute as a source of PRIDE
 • the government would experiment on the students, starving them to see how long they could go without food before it seriously affected them. officially, over 6,000 native children died in residential schools. our government admits the number was likely much higher
 • residential schools were literally hitler’s source of inspiration for concentration camps during world war II
 • where im working right now, there are people in their 30s who were forced to attend residential schools
 • the last residential school closed in 1996, one year after i was born, two hours away from where i live, twenty minutes from my family’s reserve

<p>Starsio is gifted with a beautiful voice. He worked as a street performer in his home town along with his friend, Melody. Starsio would sing his little heart out all day while Melody acted as the hype girl of the duo, gathering audience, getting the crowd excited and accepting/demanding money from onlookers. Life was hard for the two, but they managed to make ends meet somehow.<br/></p>
<p>Here’s a sketch of Starsio and Melody back in the good ol’ days.</p>

<p>All of this changed though when one day Starsio was kidnapped off of the streets by a bunch of goons!!!!<br/></p>
<p>Starsio was taken to the cabaret/brothel “Paprika”. This establishment is notorious for human trafficking and forced labor, however is protected by the Law Enforcement of Capital City. Starsio was forced to become a singer at Paprika. The boss there had heard of Starsio and his voice and decided he would be the perfect change the establishment needed in order to boost business.</p>
<p>All of this was very hard on poor Starsio. At first he was helpless to do anything, however, not long after he was brought to Paprika, Starsio awakened a mysterious ability. He could suddenly <b>conjure fireflies that would do his bidding! </b>Here’s a WIP of his fire fly magic!</p>

<p><b>Personality</b><br/></p>
<p>Starsio is mild mannered and very polite. He gets irritated by things often but he never loses his temper. He is more of a passive aggressive type. He is also not a leader type of person. Back at home Melody acted as the leader of the two. However, Starsio steps up and assumes leadership when him and Arthur set their escape plan in motion. </p>
<p>He also has an inner diva that comes out from time to time. Here’s a draft skill animation that kinda shows that side of him.</p>

He LOVES unhealthy candy. Glow in the dark  and fluorescent candy is his favorite. </p>
<p>In fact, candy items have bonus effects on him if used in battle! That’s how much he loves CANDY!!!!</p>

<p>Starsio was taken to the cabaret/brothel “Paprika”. This establishment is notorious for human trafficking and forced labor, however is protected by the Law Enforcement of Capital City. Starsio was forced to become a singer at Paprika. The boss there had heard of Starsio and his voice and decided he would be the perfect change the establishment needed in order to boost business.</p>
<p>All of this was very hard on poor Starsio. At first he was helpless to do anything, however, not long after he was brought to Paprika, Starsio awakened a mysterious ability. He could suddenly <b>conjure fireflies that would do his bidding! </b>Here’s a WIP of his fire fly magic!</p>

<p>He also has an inner diva that comes out from time to time. Here’s a draft skill animation that kinda shows that side of him.</p>

He LOVES unhealthy candy. Glow in the dark  and fluorescent candy is his favorite. </p>
<p>In fact, candy items have bonus effects on him if used in battle! That’s how much he loves CANDY!!!!</p>

<p>Starsio is gifted with a beautiful voice. He worked as a street performer in his home town along with his friend, Melody. Starsio would sing his little heart out all day while Melody acted as the hype girl of the duo, gathering audience, getting the crowd excited and accepting/demanding money from onlookers. Life was hard for the two, but they managed to make ends meet somehow.<br/></p>
<p>Here’s a sketch of Starsio and Melody back in the good ol’ days.</p>

<p>All of this changed though when one day Starsio was kidnapped off of the streets by a bunch of goons!!!!<br/></p>
<p>Starsio was taken to the cabaret/brothel “Paprika”. This establishment is notorious for human trafficking and forced labor, however is protected by the Law Enforcement of Capital City. Starsio was forced to become a singer at Paprika. The boss there had heard of Starsio and his voice and decided he would be the perfect change the establishment needed in order to boost business.</p>
<p>All of this was very hard on poor Starsio. At first he was helpless to do anything, however, not long after he was brought to Paprika, Starsio awakened a mysterious ability. He could suddenly <b>conjure fireflies that would do his bidding! </b>Here’s a WIP of his fire fly magic!</p>

<p>Starsio is mild mannered and very polite. He gets irritated by things often but he never loses his temper. He is more of a passive aggressive type. He is also not a leader type of person. Back at home Melody acted as the leader of the two. However, Starsio steps up and assumes leadership when him and Arthur set their escape plan in motion. </p>
<p>He also has an inner diva that comes out from time to time. Here’s a draft skill animation that kinda shows that side of him.</p>

He LOVES unhealthy candy. Glow in the dark  and fluorescent candy is his favorite. </p>
<p>In fact, candy items have bonus effects on him if used in battle! That’s how much he loves CANDY!!!!</p>

<p>Starsio is gifted with a beautiful voice. He worked as a street performer in his home town along with his friend, Melody. Starsio would sing his little heart out all day while Melody acted as the hype girl of the duo, gathering audience, getting the crowd excited and accepting/demanding money from onlookers. Life was hard for the two, but they managed to make ends meet somehow.<br/></p>

<p>All of this changed though when one day Starsio was kidnapped off of the streets by a bunch of goons!!!!<br/></p>
<p>Starsio was taken to the cabaret/brothel “Paprika”. This establishment is notorious for human trafficking and forced labor, however is protected by the Law Enforcement of Capital City. Starsio was forced to become a singer at Paprika. The boss there had heard of Starsio and his voice and decided he would be the perfect change the establishment needed in order to boost business.</p>
<p>All of this was very hard on poor Starsio. At first he was helpless to do anything, however, not long after he was brought to Paprika, Starsio awakened a mysterious ability. He could suddenly <b>conjure fireflies that would do his bidding! </b>Here’s a WIP of his fire fly magic!</p>

<p>Starsio is mild mannered and very polite. He gets irritated by things often but he never loses his temper. He is more of a passive aggressive type. He is also not a leader type of person. Back at home Melody acted as the leader of the two. However, Starsio steps up and assumes leadership when him and Arthur set their escape plan in motion. </p>
<p>He also has an inner diva that comes out from time to time. Here’s a draft skill animation that kinda shows that side of him.</p>

 breed of dog I hadn't seen before and wondered what animal it

 On the other hand, if you had a terribly traumatic experience involving
 say, an eagle, then your brain will try to protect you in every way
 possible from a similar experience. If you collect too many traumatic
 experiences with eagles, then your brain will not enjoy eagle-shapecd
 New Things. In fact, if New Things match up to too many cagle-like
 noise!!

 Then the brain may shunt the train of thought back into trauma, and

 people.)
 So the answer rests in how we categorise dogs, and what "dog" means to
 humans. Human brains associate dogs with universal categories, such

 Anything we have previously experienced and learned as A Dog gets
 added to the memory bank. Sometimes it brings new categories along
 with it. So a lifetime's experience results in excellent dog-intuition

 Brains are super good at eliminating things, too. So while the concept
 of physical doggo-ness is pretty nebulous, and has to include
 greyhounds and Pekingese and mastiffs, we know that even if an animal
 LOOKS like a bear, if the other categories don't match up in context
 (bears are not usually soft friends, they don't Bork Bork, they don't have
 long tails to wag) then it is statistically more likely to be a Doggo. If it
 occupies a dog-shaped space then it is usually a dog.
 So if you see someone dragging a fluffy whatnot along on a string, you
 will go,
 Mop? (Unlikely-seems to be self propelled.)
 ° Alien? (Unlikely-no real alien ever experienced.)
 Threat? (Vastly unlikely in context.)
 Rabbit? (No. Rabbits hop, and this appears to scurry.) (Brains are very

 and bad CGl are so uncomfortable to experience, brains just go
 INCORRECT!! That is WRONG!" Without consciously knowing why.

 discovered. You can benefit from memorics that aren't your
 own!
 On the other hand, if you had a terribly traumatic experience involving
 say, an eagle, then your brain will try to protect you in every way
 possible from a similar experience. If you collect too many traumatic
 experiences with eagles, then your brain will not enjoy eagle-shapecd
 New Things. In fact, if New Things match up to too many cagle-like

 So the answer rests in how we categorise dogs, and what "dog" means to
 humans. Human brains associate dogs with universal categories, such

 Mcat Eater
 e Soft friend
 An
 BORK BORK
 Anything we have previously experienced and learned as A Dog gets
 added to the memory bank. Sometimes it brings new categories along
 with it. So a lifetime's experience results in excellent dog-intuition
 And anything we experience with, say, a 90% match is officially a Dog.
 Brains are super good at eliminating things, too. So while the concept
 of physical doggo-ness is pretty nebulous, and has to include
 greyhounds and Pekingese and mastiffs, we know that even if an animal
 LOOKS like a bear, if the other categories don't match up in context
 (bears are not usually soft friends, they don't Bork Bork, they don't have
 long tails to wag) then it is statistically more likely to be a Doggo. If it
 occupies a dog-shaped space then it is usually a dog.
 So if you see someone dragging a fluffy whatnot along on a string, you
 will go,
 Mop? (Unlikely-seems to be self propelled.)
 ° Alien? (Unlikely-no real alien ever experienced.)
 Threat? (Vastly unlikely in context.)
 Rabbit? (No. Rabbits hop, and this appears to scurry.) (Brains are very
 keen on categorising movement patterns. This is why lurching zombies
 and bad CGl are so uncomfortable to experience, brains just go
 INCORRECT!! That is WRONG!" Without consciously knowing why.
 Anyway, very few animals move like domestic dogs!)
 Very fluffy cat? (Maybe-but not quite. Shares many characteristics,
 though!)
 Eldritch horror? (No, it is obviously a soft friend of unknown type)
 Robotic toy? (Unlikely too complex and convincing.)

 pleasing!! It may be appropriate to laugh at this animal, because we have
 just realized that it is probably a
 DOG!! Soft friend, alive, walks on leash. It had a low doggo-ness
 quotient! and a confusing Snout, but it is NOT those other Known
 Things, and it occupies a dog-shaped space!
 Hahahaha!!! It is extra funny and appealing, because it made us
 guess!! We love playing that game

 The use of bowls to house goldfish comes from a misunderstanding
 of Chinese display vessels-small, temporary containers to show
 guests goldfish that were otherwise housed in ponds. Fishbowls are
 so detrimental to goldfish health that they are prohibited by places
 like Rome for animal cruelty

By the way, bettas are the same. It’s a myth that they live  in puddles. Wild bettas live in rice patties that look like this: 
And you know how males fight in captivity? Yeah see, in the wild, each male betta has a territory of roughly one square meter [X]. That’s over 260 gallons of water per betta! Of course they’ll fight in a tiny 1 gallon tank! (The myth about puddles exists because, in the dry season, a betta may get trapped in a puddle, and it is equipped to survive that, but only for a short period of time). Also, notice how much is growing in that water - bettas need a lot of places to hide in and rest on, not just a single bamboo shoot in  the center of a vase! They will get stressed and even more aggressive without the hides. Fish are animals just like your other pets. Do your research before buying and treat them appropriately. If you can’t afford a proper betta or goldfish set up (at LEAST 5 gallons for a betta with a heater and hides, at LEAST 20 gallons for a goldfish with a strong filtering system and NO GRAVEL, and I recommend adding at least 10 gallons to those minimums for healthy and happy fish), don’t get one.
