Okay fun fact: cats were actively deployed to trenches and ships to help deal with rodent infestations in both world wars, and they had the curb cutter effect of keeping the menā€™s spirits high.
One cat, Simon, was given the rank ā€œAble Seacat Simonā€ after dutifully killing rats and mice that were destroying theĀ HMS Amethystā€™s food supplies. The ship had come under fire during the Chinese civil war and many of its crewmen had died. The cat had been gravely injured, too, but he picked out the shrapnel himself ā€“ seriously ā€“ and went straight to killing the rodents that were overrunning the ship. He unfortunately passed from his injuries two weeks before he was scheduled to receive the Dickin Medal. To this day, he is the only cat to receive this award.

this first lyric replacement (ā€take the breadsticks and runā€) is a reference to the tumblr meme ā€˜stuffing breadsticks into my purseā€™. i think everyone remembers that one so i wont bother to explain it. thatā€™s meme two (2)
ā€œman door hand hook car doorā€ is a meme of its own, a creepypasta from i dont remember when. it was a terrible stupid retelling of the genericĀ ā€˜stuck in a car while hook handed man tries to kill usā€™ story so the stupid title caught on for memorability. that in and of itself is meme three (3)
ā€˜gunā€™ isā€¦ yeah i dont know how to explain gun. long story short you add gun to the end of a phrase instead of what you expect the last word to be. its shock funny. its everywhere but its popular to add to ā€œman door hand hook car doorā€ for.. some reason? gun is meme four (4)

    Bored, Confused, and Crush: biggest-gaudiest-patronuses
 In 5th grade some boys hid my desk in the
 boys bathroom. I was confused when I got to
 school and it was missing, so l just sat on the
 floor and read my book until the teacher came
 in and made them put it back.
 I realize now they were trying to trick me
 into go into the boys bathroom, but no one
 actually told me that's where my desk was,
 and it didn't occur to me to ask.
 Looking back I realize they had to make the
 effort to get to school early to move it, and I
 feel a tiny bit of regret for not reacting more
 biggest-gaudiest-patronuses
 In 3rd grade Richard brought his new lacrosse
 set in for show in tell. the ball went missing
 during class time and at the end of the day
 we all had to check our bookbags to look for
 it. I only glanced in mine (I just wanted to
 go home), but that evening I found it at the
 bottom of my bag. I was so scared of being
 blamed, I threw it into the neighbor's yard and
 never told anyone
 I found out 2 years later that my bully Luke
 put it there to frame me, and he was stil
 extremely frustrated I hadn't gotten caught.
 I'm pretty sure Richard got a new ball
 feral-renaissance-cat
 I had a crush on a boy I met in Kindergarten
 and made NO attempts to hide it because the
 people on TV were always telling each other
 when they liked each other. Didn't work as well
 as I'd hope (i.e. didn't work AT ALL and no boy
 wanted to hang out with me ever after that),
 but that's not the point
 Skip ahead to third grade. We had a new kid
 who was kind of a jerk. One day he asks me
 if I have a crush and I'm like, "Yeah, [Crushl
 And?" Dude turns around and yells to my
 crush "Hey! She has a crush on you!"
 My crush just kinda sighs and is like, "Yeah. I
 know. Everyone knows. Thanks."
 So this guy was hoping to embarrass me in
 front of everyone but it completely backfired
 because I lack the social filter necessary to
 feel
 ashamed of my base desires
 darkhumourandfandoms
 One time in like kindergerden some kid stole
 my shoe and instead if reacting I just went
 the whole day barefoot. No one questioned it

theyā€™re doing this to give people a sense of safety , even though we full well know this wonā€™t work at all.

ALRIGHT KIDDOS LISTEN UP! I did emergency management for the air force which involves this fun thing called Plume Modelling (aka chart the path of death for a given bomb based on its payload, distance, type of detonation, etc) and let me tell you some actual LEGITā„¢ methods of minimizing damage to your life. 
Unless you are within the vaporization zone (where you turn into a fucking shadow because of your proximity to the blast) there is a specific order of events nuke blasts cause and there are ways to protect against these things.

1. There is this thing called a flash to bang ratio. It is really freaking important. The first wave from a nuke is a blinding flash of light that can literally FRY YOUR RETINAS. If you believe that a nuke has just dropped on your city, HIDE AND DONT LOOK AT IT. @shesheistyy a good solid table is good for this but youā€™re way less likely to go blind if you get to an internal room with no windows, especially one below ground. 
2. After the flash there will be the bang. If the time between the flash and the bang, counted in Mississippi seconds, is more than 10 seconds you MIGHT survive and just die of cancer later. If itā€™s between five and 10 buckle up kiddos because the worst is yet to come. And well if itā€™s less than 3 you wonā€™t live long enough to remember this. These are loose estimates only. 
3. The ā€œbangā€ usually announces the arrival of the fire ball. Yes. A massive heat shock will erupt from the core of the bomb and light pretty much every thing it comes into contact with, including your flesh, on fire. Back to that whole ā€œmetal buildings undergroundā€ thing. Thereā€™s really no getting around the whole getting lit on fire if youā€™re too close thing. 
4. Fallout. When the bomb goes off it sucks all of the shit it just vaporized up into the air with it and as the blast cools, it begins to rain down the radioactive fucked molten wreckage onto everyone in a huge radius. Just because the fallout you can see has stopped doesnā€™t mean the molecular radiation has stopped. 

The survival factors for nuclear blasts are time, distance and shielding. The longer it takes for it to get to you the less of it there is. The further away from the source the less dead you are. Want to survive? Put 6 feet of concrete and/or 2 feet of lead between you and everything else. Yes. Those loons with their bunkers actually got something right. 

NOW! About radiation! If you are so fortunate as to survive one of these blasts and not be vaporized or burnt to a crisp or die of radiation poisoning within hours, you need to understand the types of radiation. 

Gamma radiation is the most ā€œsevereā€ in that it can penetrate your flesh through your clothes and house, causing severe illness. Gamma radiation fucks with your cell walls and disrupts your DNA. It kills you in hours, months or years. Some people survive decades. Think of gamma like the sun. Too much exposure gives you cancer. 

Now Beta, on the other hand, think of Beta particles like sand on the beach. Its in the air. Its in your clothes, in the creases of your fingers. But beta particles can burn through your flesh or get into your blood stream through open wounds. Luckily they can be stopped with nonporous materials, like rubber, or foil. Make that two points for the loony conspiracy theorists. Aluminum foil does protect from beta radiation. 

And finally, Alpha radiation. Think of alpha Radiation like dust motes. It takes a high density filter to prevent you from breathing them in and if youā€™re surrounded by rubble theyā€™re probably everywhere. Alpha particles do the same thing as beta particles in terms of getting into your system and wrecking your shit. 

So! Survival? Most likely based on dumb luck. But! If you think youā€™re being nuked
1. get under ground or at least to an internal room of the building if no other options are available. 
2. CLOSE YOUR EYES. Curl into the fetal position to protect your orifices and vital organs from gamma radiation and get low to the ground to reduce damage from the blast and potential ceiling collapse. 
3.You will still feel the flash pass over you. Count. One, two, threeā€¦ If you arenā€™t vaporized yet keep counting. Pray to every god ever imagined that you get to 10 before you hear the bang. 
4. Bang. Try not to shit yourself. The fireball will follow almost instantly if youā€™re in range. Be prepared to start rolling to put yourself out. 
5. Fallout rains down. Do not open your eyes. Do not stop praying. As hard as it is because time will feel as if it has slowed to a crawl, try not to leave your position for at least 30 minutes, although 60 minutes is better. At 30 minutes, only 60% of the potential fall out has fallen but by 60 minutes, up to 90% may have come down. 
6. Remember, Alpha and beta radiation are particles. Do not put anything in your body that has not been thoroughly washed, dusted of or came from a sealed package. Point 3 for the conspiracy theorists, hot pockets and canned food are probably still safe. Do not leave shelter without goggles, and try to wrap yourself in a minimum of those weird space blankets but rubber and metal lined suits (like hazmat suits) are best for the job.

 WARNING! Saturday night I got home late and my dog
 didn't recognize me. Being a nanny I thought I woke him up
 and he was having a night terror. Sunday he was still acting
 weird. I realized I had been running my new diffuser and
 decided to turn it off. Sunday afternoon he was feeling
 better. Today at work my dog sitter said he wouldn't come
 out from beneath the bed (very odd behavior for this happy
 guy). I came home from work early and again he was very
 confused about who I was so I took him to emergency.
 Turns out the tea tree oil I was using in the diffuser is toxic
 for dogs. I didn't even put on his body. Thankfully tests
 show that his liver is okay but we aren't out of the woods
 yet. It is a full 72 hours after exposure. He was given fluids
 under his skin to try to clear out the toxins. The vet and
 poison control say they are seeing more and more of these
 cases as the popularity of essential oils is growing. Please
 be sure the essential oils you are using are not toxic for
 dogs or cats (you can find a list online... turns out tea tree is
 one of the worst). I am very upset so I would appreciate it if
 people didn't condemn me as a bad puppy mommy, but I
 wanted to share as to not have anybody else's babies go
 through this.

 A few days ago my stomach began to hurt. Thinking it
 would pass, I went home to try and rest for the night. A
 bit later I vomited. I thought that was the end of it.
 But for the rest of the night, I kept vomiting almost every
 30-40 minutes. Even after my stomach was completely
 empty, I kept vomiting. Soon it was nothing but stomach
 fluid and bile. I tried to drink water to stay hydrated, but I
 kept throwing it up, no matter how hard I tried to keep it
 This could have easily cost me hundreds or even
 thousands in the US without insurance. But here in
 Taiwan I was able to receive speedy, quality care
 comparable to what I would have gotten in a US hospital
 for relatively small amount of money
 Given this experience, I no longer have a reason to fear
 or hesitate getting care in Taiwan should I ever need it.
 America, it's time to stop making excuses.

 The Horrors of Socialized Medicine: A first hand
 experience
 A few days ago my stomach began to hurt. Thinking it
 would pass, I went home to try and rest for the night. A
 bit later I vomited. I thought that was the end of it
 But for the rest of the night, l kept vomiting almost every
 30-40 minutes. Even after my stomach was completely
 empty, I kept vomiting. Soon it was nothing but stomach
 fluid and bile. I tried to drink water to stay hydrated, but I
 kept throwing it up, no matter how hard I tried to keep it
 down
 By 3am I had severe stomach cramps, my body kept
 trying to vomit even though there was nothing left. I was
 dizzy and light-headed. My symptoms showed no signs
 of abating
 At this point I had to seek medical treatment, I knew
 had to go to the hospital
 I wanted to avoid it. I had no idea how different
 Taiwanese hospitals would be, whether I would be able
 to find an English speaking doctor, or what it would cost
 me (my US health insurance has lapsed and I don't
 qualify for Taiwanese NHI)

 My Taiwanese roommate called a taxi and took me to
 the ER at NTU Hospital. I was immediately checked-in by
 an English speaking nurse. Within 20 minutes I was given
 IV fluids and anti-emetics. They took blood tests and did
 an ultrasound to ensure it wasn't gall stones or
 appendicitis. From there I was given a diagnosis: a
 particularly severe case of Acute Viral Gastroenteritis
 (aka the stomach flu). After about 3 hours on an IV I
 began to feel slightly better, my nausea disappeared and
 my stomach began to calm down. I was discharged with
 a prescription for anti-emetics and pain medication.
 Each day since lve gotten progressively better and am
 now pretty much back to normal
 The bill for the ER visit?
 US$80.00
 Eighty. American. Dollars
 Out of pocket. Full cost. No discounts. No insurance.
 At one of the best hospitals in Taiwan.
 And if I had NHI, it would have been a fraction of that.
 This could have easily cost me hundreds or even
 thousands in the US without insurance. But here in
 Taiwan I was able to receive speedy, quality care
 comparable to what I would have gotten in a US hospital
 for relatively small amount of money.
 Given this experience, I no longer have a reason to fear
 or hesitate getting care in Taiwan should I ever need it
 America, it's time to stop making excuses.

 an English speaking nurse. Within 20 minutes I was given
 IV fluids and anti-emetics. They took blood tests and did
 an ultrasound to ensure it wasn't gall stones or
 appendicitis. From there I was given a diagnosis: a
 particularly severe case of Acute Viral Gastroenteritis
 (aka the stomach flu). After about 3 hours on an IV I
 began to feel slightly better, my nausea disappeared and
 my stomach began to calm down. I was discharged with
 a prescription for anti-emetics and pain medication.
 Each day since lve gotten progressively better and am
 now pretty much back to normal
 The bill for the ER visit?
 US$80.00
 Eighty. American. Dollars
 Out of pocket. Full cost. No discounts. No insurance.
 At one of the best hospitals in Taiwan.
 And if I had NHI, it would have been a fraction of that.
 This could have easily cost me hundreds or even
 thousands in the US without insurance. But here in
 Taiwan I was able to receive speedy, quality care
 comparable to what I would have gotten in a US hospital
 for relatively small amount of money.
 Given this experience, I no longer have a reason to fear

I had a similar experience in Hong Kong. I was in bad shape; they fixed me up good and quickly. I was shocked when my entire emergency visit didnā€™t cost me anything. In the U.S, an unexpected hospital visit can easily cost you MORE than a monthā€™s rent. people literally lose their homes trying to pay medical bills that even a small fraction of our military budget could easily cover.the thing is, we have weapon industry lobbyists. we donā€™t have lobbyists or big money advocating for the average citizen. right now, money is more important than people and that needs to change

    Bailey Jay, Family, and Get Money: Cancel Your Credit Card Before

 A lady died this past January, and the bank billed
 her for February and March for their annual service
 charges on her credit card, and added late fees and
 interest on the monthly charge. The balance had
 been $0.00 when she died, but now somewhere
 around $60.00. A family member placed a call to
 the Bank

 Here is the exchange
 Family Member: am calling to tell you she died
 back in January
 Bank The account was never closed and the late
 fees and charges stil apply.

 has been.'

Capitalism will put the bill on your grave and harass your grieving family until they pay

One of my cousins passed away unexpectedly at the age of 35, and had been paying back a loan from the bank. About two weeks after his death, my great aunt received a statement from the bank (his mail was being delivered to her house) about a late payment. She called the bank and explained the situation and the only thing a manager could say was ā€œWell, thatā€™s unfortunate. We can arrange so payments will resume in 30 days, that should be enough time to have already paid for the other arrangements.ā€ 
On top of the unexpected $10,000 funeral, cremation and burial bill, my aunt had to finish paying my uncleā€™s $5,000 loan. Sheā€™s a disabled retiree, on a fixed income, and could barely afford to pay for her insulin for diabetes. She nearly lost her home of more than 40 years. Fuck the system. 


She didnā€™t need to pay.  When people die, their debts are not their familyā€™s responsibility.
In fact, it is outright illegal to try and collect those debts from a person who didnā€™t cosign the loan and isnā€™t executing the will.

My great-grandmother had her identity stolen before she died at the age of 93, and thousands of charges were racked up on credit cards in her name. After she passed away, they called my mother to try and collect. My mom laughed at them, and told them: ā€œSheā€™s dead, good luck collecting.ā€ The credit card asked my mother, ā€œDonā€™t you want to clear your grandmotherā€™s debts? Donā€™t you want to clear her good name?ā€ My mom laughed at them again. ā€œNo,ā€ she said. ā€œBecause a 90 year old wasnā€™t watching porn with those credit cards, and her name is fine. Donā€™t give credit cards to old women likely to pass away soon. This is on you.ā€
Which is how I learned as a young child to always question collection agents, and to never pay off debts that arenā€™t your own. They often canā€™t even collect that money from the estate, if there is one, depending on how you write your will and what kind of account the money was kept in.

If a loved one of yours dies and bill collectors (credit cards, loans, etc etc) start calling you off the hook and request that you pay off their debts, tell them in no uncertain terms to go fuck themselves.
The reason being is that the moment you give them a single penny, that debt is now on YOU because youā€™ve now agreed to pay it off.

 A lady died this past January, and the bank billed
 her for February and March for their annual service
 charges on her credit card, and added late fees and
 interest on the monthly charge. The balance had
 been $0.00 when she died, but now somewhere
 around $60.00. A family member placed a call to
 the Bank

 Here is the exchange
 Family Member: am calling to tell you she died
 back in January
 Bank The account was never closed and the late
 fees and charges stil apply.
 Family Member : 'Maybe, you should turn it over to
 collections.
 Bank: 'Since it is two months past due, it already
 has been.'
 Family Member So, what will they do when they
 find out she is dead?'
 Bank: 'Either report her account to frauds division
 or report her to the credit bureau, maybe both!'
 Family Member 'Do you think God will be mad at
 her?'
 Bank: 'Excuse me?'

 Family Member: 'Did you just get what I was
 telling you -
 the part about her being dead?'
 Bank: 'Sir, you'll have to speak to my supervisor.'

 Family Member 'I'm calling to tell you, she died
 back in January with a $0 balance.

 Bank: 'Our system just isn't setup for death.
 I don't know what more I can do to help.

 If not, you could just keep billing her. She won't

 Bank: 'Well, the late fees and charges do still
 apply.

Capitalism will put the bill on your grave and harass your grieving family until they pay

One of my cousins passed away unexpectedly at the age of 35, and had been paying back a loan from the bank. About two weeks after his death, my great aunt received a statement from the bank (his mail was being delivered to her house) about a late payment. She called the bank and explained the situation and the only thing a manager could say was ā€œWell, thatā€™s unfortunate. We can arrange so payments will resume in 30 days, that should be enough time to have already paid for the other arrangements.ā€ 
On top of the unexpected $10,000 funeral, cremation and burial bill, my aunt had to finish paying my uncleā€™s $5,000 loan. Sheā€™s a disabled retiree, on a fixed income, and could barely afford to pay for her insulin for diabetes. She nearly lost her home of more than 40 years. Fuck the system. 


She didnā€™t need to pay.  When people die, their debts are not their familyā€™s responsibility.
In fact, it is outright illegal to try and collect those debts from a person who didnā€™t cosign the loan and isnā€™t executing the will.

They really do. 
My great-grandmother had her identity stolen before she died at the age of 93, and thousands of charges were racked up on credit cards in her name. After she passed away, they called my mother to try and collect. My mom laughed at them, and told them: ā€œSheā€™s dead, good luck collecting.ā€ The credit card asked my mother, ā€œDonā€™t you want to clear your grandmotherā€™s debts? Donā€™t you want to clear her good name?ā€ My mom laughed at them again. ā€œNo,ā€ she said. ā€œBecause a 90 year old wasnā€™t watching porn with those credit cards, and her name is fine. Donā€™t give credit cards to old women likely to pass away soon. This is on you.ā€
Which is how I learned as a young child to always question collection agents, and to never pay off debts that arenā€™t your own. They often canā€™t even collect that money from the estate, if there is one, depending on how you write your will and what kind of account the money was kept in.

Blogging this tweet because this explains SO MUCH about the mindset of pretty much all the folks Iā€™ve known whoā€™re against single-payer, itā€™s not even funnyā€¦
Thisā€¦.
This never occurred to me. Not once. That Americans are against Health Care because they think it actually costs tens of thousands of dollars for a broken arm, hundreds of thousands for a complicated birth, millions for cancer treatment.
Because theyā€™ve never known anything different. The idea that a broken arm is only a couple hundred bucks; a complicated birth a couple thousand; cancer treatment only tens of thousands; all easily covered by existing tax structures.

This explains a lot. Ā And itā€™s a good example of what I was talking about in my post on scarcity being used to prop up ableism ā€“ always question the idea that a resource is genuinely scarce. Ā Even if it seems obvious that it is, quite often thatā€™s the result of careful manipulation and misconceptions that youā€™re not even aware of. Ā 
And never think youā€™re too smart to be fooled by that kind of thing, it doesnā€™t work like that. Ā Similarly, donā€™t think people who are fooled by something are stupid. Ā Nobody can have all the information about everything, and nobody has the time and energy to investigate and put together conscious conclusions about every piece of information theyā€™re given. Ā It doesnā€™t take being stupid, or even just gullible, to believe something like this.


I currently live in a country without free medical care and still, itā€™s enormously cheap compared to the USA. An American expat wrote a piece for our English language paper about how she paid more for parking at the hospital than giving birth to her baby thatā€™s pretty interesting:

Yesterday I had to go to the hospital cause I injured my eye, Iā€™m frankly dreading what the bill is going to be, but what made me balk was being told in the pharmacy that my insurance was denied for the antibiotic eye drops and itā€™d be over $100 out of pocket. So I didnā€™t get my eyedrops.

Iā€™ve had these same drops before living in the UK. They cost me seven GBP.

Itā€™s the exact same drug, same steroid, same strain of antibiotic. But somehow the US gets away with charging $100 for a generic non brand version of a drug which is easy to create and widely used. Itā€™s downright robbery, but also a form of eugenics through poverty and class warfare. You keep the poor poor by making sure basic necessities remain unattainable and then you make it seem like the norm so no one fights it.

The rest of the world is not like this.

Eat the rich. Resist.

My blood pressure medication (Candesartan) costs between $40-$125 USD for 30 tablets in the US.Here in Germany, 98 tablets costs me 5 Euro.

The worst part is, the people pocketing the most of this money are powerful enough to keep it this way, and in the event that legislation of some kind actually brought prices down, they could cry to the government that their profits were taken from them and lobby to ā€œmake upā€ their losses in some way that you can guarantee will still hurt the lower classes.Most likely, they would end up getting billions in corporate welfare, and when it came time to make any budget cuts, theyā€™d be able to use the same influence to keep their handouts while welfare and food stamps for poorer, hungrier people end up on the chopping block first.
