Mitchell St. shows an adult male go behind the counter to approach and punch a female manager-waitress in the face. Alderman Bob Donovan, who obtained the video footage yesterday, said the incident took place last week. He said he hopes the public can help the Milwaukee PoliceDepartment locate the suspect as soon as possible. “It is sickening to see this unsuspecting worker assaulted so brutally by this individual,” said Alderman Donovan, chair of the Public Safety and Health Committee. Alderman Donovan said MPD is actively seeking a known individual but also welcomes additional information from the community that might help the case. “It was an unprovoked attack and I am asking anyone with information to please contact MPD immediately at 414-935-7360 so we can get him off the street and behind bars where he belongs,” he said. The video shows a George Webb co-worker pointing a firearm at the suspect to get him away from the victim. Alderman Donovan said the co-worker – who he was told has a concealed carry permit for the firearm – was successful in getting the suspect to leave the premises. “One can only imagine what might have occurred if that employee had not pulled out her weapon,” the alderman said. “Sadly, I’m told the co-worker quit her job shortly after the incident.” “And can you really blame her for quitting? This is just sickening and I am tired of this crap happening in my district and in too many other neighborhoods across Milwaukee,” he said.  A note on consent
 I filmed a scene today with a young child actor
 who had to quickly peck me on the lips as I
 tucked him into bed. The moment in the film is
 supposed to be somewhat uncomfortable,
 unexpected. I've gotten to know him over the
 past five days of shooting - he is a remarkable,
 kind and intuitive kid. He often appears much
 younger than his 12 years of age, waving his
 flashlight under a blanket and singing
 DISSSSC000 PARTYYYYY!!, but now and again
 an old-soul quality of his blinks up at me
 through messy light brown hair.
 He had read the script so he knew the kiss was
 coming, yet when the production team walked
 through it for blocking we'd gloss over the
 moment, nervous about making him
 uncomfortable. He's young and doesn't know
 me all that well and it's a lot to ask of a kid who
 met you five days ago.
 But eventually we had to run it, because that's
 what you have to do. And so when the director
 said we were going to do it for real, our young
 actor pulled me in for a sec and whispered
 "Hey Simone, I want to make sure you're okay
 with everything that happens with the kiss. Do
 you feel okay? Please tell me if l'm ever doing
 too much or if I hurt you or make you feel
 scared." This took many times longer to say
 than the kiss would take to film. True to his
 word, after every take of a .3 second peck, he
 grabbed my hand and whispered Was that
 okay? Did you feel okay?" And then we'd high-
 five and he'd burrow back under the covers to
 resume his flashlight disco party until the next
 take.

This is what “equality” looks like in that liberal fairy tale land of Finland.  They punish you proportionately to how successful you are.  Sounds really “fair.”

Except… it is fair? Because it’s proportionate. I don’t get what’s difficult about that. An impoverished person paying $400 dollar fine isn’t the same as a millionaire paying the same amount. For the poor person, $400 dollars could mean starving. Would you really claim it would have the same consequence for a rich man? Would it even be noticeable to him, while the absence of food in their stomach would be glaring to a poorer man? Would it be fair for a man to starve for the same crime as a man that would be having a three course meal?
By taking income into account, it allows the impoverished able to still survive while paying any fines they may incur. And, ultimately, while $100,000 dollars would be noticeable to a millionaire, they would still get by. And, assuming the law is properly implemented, they would be paying the same equivalent of their yearly income that a poorer person would. That’s what makes it fair. They would be impacted the same way - but you are looking at the amount rather than the equation.
Also, it’s important to make sure that even the rich would pause at the cost of a fine. They need to fear the law just as a poor man does.

Finnish person here. Our speeding ticket system owns and only people who bitch about them are people who wanna break the laws - the loudest whiners are the rich people who think they can just pay their way out of trouble and that’s why we have laws like that.

Two years ago, I decided to write again. Having just returned from a trip back to Xela after nearly 9 years, it felt right. I wrote this poem through tears, posted it to Tumblr, and then let it be. 

One year ago, I decided to submit this poem for publication with @tiachuchapress. I rushed to edit/excise those bits and parts that didn’t stand the test of time. I clicked send, and then let it be.

Today I read “Where is Guatemala?,” out loud, for the first time ever. Today I looked back on words that I have not dared read since submission, lest I discover some glaring flaw. And yet, reading today, I knew this was not a “lesser” poem from my past. It’s different, for sure, but like “Chapingolandia,” it stands for a certain moment, a certain feeling, a certain Central American mix of dust and incense in the air. And so I do not merely let it be, but celebrate this piece that I’ve nurtured for so long.
