How about the time the Dalai Lama got wasted and spray-painted ā€œKarma Is a Beachā€ on the Tibetan ambassadorā€™s limo? Probably not, since they never happened. But they could happen if a filmmaker decides to write those scenes into his or her movie. And, even though we know the movie is fiction, those scenes will live on in our shared cultural conscience as impressions of those real people, thereby corrupting our memory of them built on their real-life actions.Thatā€™s why filmmakers have a responsibility when playing with peopleā€™s perceptions of admired historic people to maintain a basic truth about the content of their character. Quentin Tarantinoā€™s portrayal of Bruce Lee in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood does not live up to this standard. Of course, Tarantino has the artistic right to portray Bruce any way he wants. But to do so in such a sloppy and somewhat racist way is a failure both as an artist and as a human being.This controversy has left me torn. Tarantino is one of my favorite filmmakers because he is so bold, uncompromising and unpredictable. Thereā€™s a giddy energy in his movies of someone who loves movies and wants you to love them, too. I attend each Tarantino film as if it were an event, knowing that his distillation of the ā€™60s and ā€™70s action movies will be much more entertaining than a simple homage. Thatā€™s what makes the Bruce Lee scenes so disappointing, not so much on a factual basis, but as a lapse of cultural awareness.Bruce Lee was my friend and teacher. That doesnā€™t give him a free pass for how heā€™s portrayed in movies. But it does give me some insight into the man. I first met Bruce when I was a student at UCLA looking to continue my martial arts studies, which I started in New York City. We quickly developed a friendship as well as a student-teacher relationship. He taught me the discipline and spirituality of martial arts, which was greatly responsible for me being able to play competitively in the NBA for 20 years with very few injuries.During our years of friendship, he spoke passionately about how frustrated he was with the stereotypical representation of Asians in film and TV. The only roles were for inscrutable villains or bowing servants. In Have Gun - Will Travel, Paladinā€™s faithful Chinese servant goes by the insulting name of ā€œHey Boyā€ (Kam Tong). He was replaced in season four by a female character referred to as ā€œHey Girlā€ (Lisa Lu). Asian men were portrayed as sexless accessories to a scene, while the women were subservient. This was how African-American men and women were generally portrayed until the advent of Sidney Poitier and blaxploitation films. Bruce was dedicated to changing the dismissive image of Asians through his acting, writing and promotion of Jeet Kune Do, his interpretation of martial arts.Thatā€™s why it disturbs me that Tarantino chose to portray Bruce in such a one-dimensional way. The John Wayne machismo attitude of Cliff (Brad Pitt), an aging stuntman who defeats the arrogant, uppity Chinese guy harks back to the very stereotypes Bruce was trying to dismantle. Of course the blond, white beefcake American can beat your fancy Asian chopsocky dude because that foreign crap doesnā€™t fly here.I might even go along with the skewered version of Bruce if that wasnā€™t the only significant scene with him, if weā€™d also seen a glimpse of his other traits, of his struggle to be taken seriously in Hollywood. Alas, he was just another Hey Boy prop to the scene. The scene is complicated by being presented as a flashback, but in a way that could suggest the stuntmanā€™s memory is cartoonishly biased in his favor. Equally disturbing is the unresolved shadow that Cliff may have killed his wife with a spear gun because she nagged him. Classic Cliff. Is Cliff more heroic because he also doesnā€™t put up with outspoken women?I was in public with Bruce several times when some random jerk would loudly challenge Bruce to a fight. He always politely declined and moved on. First rule of Bruceā€™s fight club was donā€™t fight ā€” unless there is no other option. He felt no need to prove himself. He knew who he was and that the real fight wasnā€™t on the mat, it was on the screen in creating opportunities for Asians to be seen as more than grinning stereotypes. Lady Liberty is a black woman.

Guys, this has been thoroughly debunkedĀ sinceĀ 2000, and it does the statue on the left there a huge disservice to treat her as an unwanted copy. Thatā€™s Lady Liberty of St. Maarten, an homage from 2007 (post-dating the debunking, even) that was dedicated to the anniversary of the ending of slavery there:
The Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor is a representation of Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, with bonus American iconography:
HOWEVER: Lady Liberty in New York is not based on a white woman, either.Ā 
Sheā€™s a Muslim Arab woman, at least in terms of the modeling of her face. Her face was reused from an abandoned project to build a colossal statue of a modern Egyptian Arab peasant woman near the Suez Canal (as verified by the Smithsonian, no less).
While she wasnā€™t originally dedicated specifically for immigrants, the poemĀ ā€œThe New Colossusā€ was added specifically because of the position she occupied in the harbor and the symbolic visual power she would have to immigrants coming in. The author, Emma Lazarus, was Jewish.
Itā€™s important to fight back on the whitewashing of history, because it happens left and right, but it shouldnā€™t happen at the cost of misinformation that treats Lady Liberty of St. Maarten as an unwanted prototype rather than a powerful monument in her own right and, ironically, claims that sheā€™s now a white woman when sheā€™s not while also ignoring the powerful influence of the Jewish-American community on the final version.

Iā€™ve been taking too long to do data entry and Iā€™m not good at actually doing analysis so itā€™s time to start naming and shaming.
@thatpettyblackgirl is a blog that Iā€™ve been observing for a while that has a really interesting pattern of behavior. 
Namely, posting a bunch of shit like this. 
Remember that tweet about Olive Garden supporting Donald Trump that was debunked? Well when it circulated on tumblr two weeks ago it was because of @thatpettyblackgirl
You know the misreported post about the school lunch program that refused donations from a local businessman? That was a different blogger but thatpettyblackgirl has circulated another version of it. 
That other blogger has a posting history thatā€™s full of the same kinds of things thatpettyblackgirl posts - lots of reposts from twitter, lots of screenshots from other sites, not a lot of commentary, and things that are decontextualized enough to make them seem worse than they are or to totally misrepresent the actions depicted (like this reposted video and tweets indignant about a man being arrested when the very specific purpose of his protest was to get arrested).
It reminds me of that post about coconut husks as a wood alternative thatā€™s been circulating recently - a screenshot of a white man above a news article is posted with the complaint that white people ā€œdiscoveringā€ coconuts after disregarding them as useless when the article is about a new method of processing coconut husks that allows them to be put to new uses. 
That blog is fascinating. And has a lot in common with thatpettyblackgirl - both of them reblog their own posts at a rate thatā€™s higher than Iā€™ve seen on most tumblrs (btw, you should know that a while back I asked for volunteers who would let me explore their tumblrs and while my research sample isnā€™t random it is a collection of small and large blogs and none of them have *checks notes* reblogged their own post of a bunch of screencaps of a tweet storm five times in the last couple of days). Both of them tend to post screencaps, neither one really writes much. They reblog a lot of memes, and both have some pretty big textposts that are just straight rip-offs of tweets (ā€bi folks have you eaten today? answer quick and iced coffee doesnā€™t countā€ is one of thatpettyblackgirlā€™s recent popular textposts and itā€™s ripped off from twitter.) They also reblog eachother a fair amount - along with @whyyoustabbedme and @endangered-justice-seeker, who ALSO have really weird posting patterns.
Also all four of those blogs are part of a group of nine blogs that were created in a three-week period of 2017 that Iā€™ve been watching that donā€™t seem to follow a pattern of normal tumblr behavior and that also post an awful lot of incorrect viral posts and are staggeringly popular (for clarity: blackqueerblog is not one of the nine created in that time period). 

ANYWAY this is all reminding me very strongly of bellygangstaboo and lagonegirl. 
I know I probably sound like this image:
But there are excellent, thoughtful bloggers who discuss police brutality, racism in the US, class warefare, and institutional bias who arenā€™t ALSO unflaggingly committed to having their own dedicated Snopes pages. @odinsblog, Franchesca Ramsey, @antifainternational, and @mostlysignssomeportents might be a good place to start. 
My dudes, I donā€™t want to be depressing so Iā€™ll let Vanity Fair do it for me:

That Russian operatives could so effectively engage Americans with 
tactics as simple as Facebook ads, fake-news postings, and Twitter 
trolls, shows how dangerous misinformation is in the social-media age, 
when propaganda can be so easily amplified. More important, it 
highlights how primed Americans already were for manipulation. 
When the ICE raids started up again a few months ago thatpettyblackgirl was posting about how shameful it was that there was nothing that could be done. A lot of these blogs are writing about how itā€™s impossible for black people to succeed in America, theyā€™re writing about how voting is always rigged and you canā€™t fight the system.
And you know what that goes against every fucking principle of my cold little anarchist heart. These blogs are full of despair - they look like theyā€™re full of cute memes and fresh news but theyā€™re a poisoned pill telling you not to bother because you canā€™t fight the system. Theyā€™re not offering help, theyā€™re training you not to bother fighting for your rights (there was a popular post about how the Hong Kong protesters are light years ahead of US protesters - that post didnā€™t talk about mutual aid or sharing tactics, it just said ā€œpeople in the US would neverā€ and left it at that, like we canā€™t learn from each other and share information across borders)
Fucking. Anyway. Iā€™ve been fairly quiet about this because Iā€™ve been trying to be all good and data sciencey about it but Iā€™ve seen this post on my dash fifty times this week. 
Keep your eye out for @thatpettyblackgirlĀ  @uncommonbish @whyyoustabbedme and @blackqueerblog - all of them have large followings and are known to post tweets and news articles out of context and if youā€™re considering reblogging information from one of their blogs please make a point to fact-check the post yourself. 
Not everything they post is wrong. I donā€™t know if these are real bloggers who donā€™t care about the potential negative impact of their tweet thievery or if theyā€™re weird psyops blogs that are intended to make you feel hopeless about your place in the political process. Whatever they are it doesnā€™t matter when they continually post misinformation and donā€™t seem to care about stopping so please be cautious.
Anyway, Iā€™m cataloguing these sorts of posts at @psyops-redux so if you want to keep an eye out for stuff thatā€™s debunked Iā€™ll tag by originating blogger over there.

Fucking. Anyway. Iā€™ve been fairly quiet about this because Iā€™ve been trying to be all good and data sciencey about it but Iā€™ve seen this post on my dash fifty times this week. 
Keep your eye out for @thatpettyblackgirlĀ  @uncommonbish @whyyoustabbedme and @blackqueerblog - all of them have large followings and are known to post tweets and news articles out of context and if youā€™re considering reblogging information from one of their blogs please make a point to fact-check the post yourself. 
Not everything they post is wrong. I donā€™t know if these are real bloggers who donā€™t care about the potential negative impact of their tweet thievery or if theyā€™re weird psyops blogs that are intended to make you feel hopeless about your place in the political process. Whatever they are it doesnā€™t matter when they continually post misinformation and donā€™t seem to care about stopping so please be cautious.
Anyway, Iā€™m cataloguing these sorts of posts at @psyops-redux so if you want to keep an eye out for stuff thatā€™s debunked Iā€™ll tag by originating blogger over there.

With 12,000 sq.-ft., the restaurant will consist of five levels, with floor-to-ceiling windows and rooftop seating for customers to take in the view of Manhattan. ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā € ā €ā € According to design manager Nathaniel Cates, while the location will be the franchise's tallest location, it will be quite narrow at only 15-ft. wide, but will pay homage to the events of 9-11 in a major way. ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā € ā €ā € ā€œWith the restaurant sitting under half a mile from Ground Zero and the 9-11 Memorial, Catesā€™ team wanted to respectfully pay homage to the significance of the location,ā€ reads the press release. ā€œThey drew designs for the front of the building to be stacked fully with glass windows, with elements built into the faƧade that give a subtle impression of the Twin Towers ā€“ one on each side of the restaurant. Los Angeles Votes to End Columbus Day and Replace with Indigenous People Day-blogged by @thereal__bee ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā € ā €ā € The votes are in and LosAngeles is officially planning to no longer honor Christopher Columbusā€™ day as a holiday. ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā € ā €ā € The city council voted to no longer celebrate Columbus Day, a tribute to the man who allegedly discovered North America, and instead will pay homage to the people who already lived in America. ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā € ā €ā € The work to rename the holiday began in 2015, when Councilman Mitch Oā€™Farrell proposed the idea, noting that Columbusā€™ real legacy is one of ā€œextreme violence, enslavement, and brutality.ā€ ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā € ā €ā € Oā€™Farrell, a member of the Wyandotte Nation tribe, also mentioned that Columbusā€™ legacy was one of ā€œthe suffering, destruction of cultures, and subjugation of Los Angelesā€™ original indigenous people, who were here thousands of years before anyone else.ā€ ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā €ā € In school, children are told a story of Columbus setting sail in 1492 in an attempt to prove that the Earth is round. Today (July 30), History of the Batman wants to wish actor and California Governor Arnold @Schwarzenegger a bat-tastic 70th birthday! For us Bat fans, Schwarzenegger portrayed Victor Fries aka Mr. Freeze opposite George Clooney's Batman in Joel Schumacher's 1997 live action film "Batman & Robin"! When molecular biologist Victor Fries suffers from a tragic accident while trying to preserve his dying wife Nora Fries, his heart turns cold and becomes the villain Mr. Freeze who can only survive in sub zero temperatures and plans to save his beloved wife by threatening to turn Gotham City into a frozen tundra. Schwarzenegger's Freeze was based on Paul Dini and Bruce Timm's "Batman: The Animated Series" award winning episode 'Heart of Ice' and design from Doug Moench and Kelley Jones' story "Frozen Assets" in Batman (Vol 1) 525 from 1995. "Batman & Robin" paying homage to the 1960s TV series 'Batman' gave us the punny and chilling performance from Schwarzenegger, making his role perhaps the most memorable in Schumacher's universally panned movie. We thank Mr. Schwarzenegger for brining to life a now cherished sympathetic rogue from Batman's gallery. Happy birthday Arnold!
