I figured he must have wanted to get together while WWE was in town, and got on my flight, thinking I would catch up with him the next day – that we would grab lunch before the show, or he could come backstage and hang out with some of the guys. But that next day, my wife asked me again to call him, telling me of the urgency in his voice, and how it seemed very important. As it turned out, Leon wasn’t calling me to have lunch, catch up, or to hang out backstage. He was calling me as a friend, telling me that he had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure, and had been given two years to live. On Monday night, one year and eight months after telling me of his diagnosis, Leon White passed away, leaving behind him a loving son, a legacy as one of the very best big men to ever grace the ring (the very best, in my opinion) and a great mystery as to why one of the biggest drawing cards of his era has yet to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. No matter how many times I talked with Leon, the conversation would eventually turn to the Hall of Fame, and I would constantly tell him that no one or no thing, not even his absence from the WWE Hall of Fame could take away from what he had accomplished around the world. He was quite simply one of the biggest stars our business has ever known. He worked hard. He worked injured. He brought out the very best in so many people he faced – including me. On a worldwide basis he was so much bigger and meant so much more to our business than so many people who have gone on to receive far more accolades - including me, including just about everyone. A few years ago, I was honored to be asked by Leon to write the forward for his book. I did my very best to come up with something that was worthy of the man and his body of outstanding work. I said a lot of the things I really felt needed to be said at that time – and probably need to be repeated now, more than ever. FOREWARD: by Mick Foley I had a unique problem in the spring of 1993 for which there was really only one solution. I had become a babyface - a good guy for Ted Turner's World Championship Wrestling (WCW) - a few months earlier, and things were going fairly well with one exception; it was difficult for me to get sympathy from the fans. As a heel, a bad guy, I'd been portrayed as a guy who thrived on pain, maybe even liked it - which helped create a very interesting wrestling villain persona. It did not, however, make for a terribly sympathetic portrait as a good guy. I requested a meeting with WCW booker Dusty Rhodes, and together we came up with a plan to combat the sympathy problem. Quite simply, I would wrestle Vader. Two matches, twenty stitches, a broken nose, and a memorable ambulance ride later, my sympathy problem was a thing of the past. Vader had cured it. It was almost impossible not to feel a sense of sympathy for an opponent of Leon White during his career as Vader. To me, he was the most believable, most talented "monster" wrestler of his generation. No one was better at being the immovable object, that inpenetrable wall than Leon White. Eventually - if you worked hard enough, and if it was in the interest of doing business - the object would move and the wall would crumble in spectacular fashion. But if you were his opponent, he'd make damn sure that you were the very best irresistible force you could possibly be - or he'd eat you alive. The price you paid to be the best you could be against Vader was high - but the rewards for going places you didn't know you could go, until he helped you get there, were even higher. Every year fans wonder if Leon and White will finally be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, and every year, most of those HOF slots are filled by wrestlers who didn't draw a fraction of the money, or contribute to the wrestling business on nearly the level that Leon White/Vader did. I'm not belittling the importance of the WWE Hall of Fame. Indeed, being inducted was one of the personal highlights of my career. But the selection process is more than a little subjective in nature. In the event that he continues to be overlooked, let me put forth my criteria for which Leon White should not only be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, but be considered one of the greatest, most influential wrestlers of his generation. 1) He drew more money, with a wider variety of opponents, for different promotions, on a global basis, than just about any of his contemporaries. Basically, until WWE tried to fix something that wasn't broken, Vader was money everywhere he went. 2) He brought out the best in his opponents. Vader "paid it forward" by bringing out the very best in some of the greatest stars of his time, and of all time. 3) His matches stand the test of time. No matter what trends the business may go through, Vader's believable brawling, combined with his impressive athleticism will never go out of style. 4) He was able to turn a 6'4, 300 pound maniac with a love for pain into a sympathetic underdog. Who's the man? Leon White was, and always will be. Rest in peace, my friend.

mick foley: MICK FOLEY DB SWEENEY OMG SANTA I KNOW FORMERNEIGHBORS REUNITE REUNION On countless occasions, while watching movies at the Foley house, that DB Sweeney was in, my parents would talk fondly about the years when the Sweeneys lived two houses down the street from us. DB is an acclaimed actor who has appeared in more than 50 movies, including "Fire in the Sky", "Eight Men Out", "Spawn", "Memphis Belle" and the recent "The Resurrection of Gavin Stone". My personal memories seem to kick in from the time I was about three years old, so the Sweeney family must have moved away right before that magical age. Keep doing what you do because you make all the kids you meet as well as us adults true believers, not only in the magic of Christmas but also in humanity and kindness. Until the day a camera crew showed up at my house, I did not quite believe that the #HolyFoley show was really going to happen. Because of my doubts, I had continued to book dates on the road every weekend, so when the show actually happened, I worked without a day off for seven straight weeks. I filmed our show all week, flew or drove out for appearances each weekend, and started the process over again – for 49 straight days. I would look at my schedule and think "If I can just cancel that British Columbia trip, I'm going to make it through this thing". WWE was behind me – they would have gladly flown in a substitute or two, and #KelownaInvasion promoter Mike Chisholm said he understood... and then proceeded to do a pretty good job convincing me that there was no real replacement for Mick Foley! To make matters worse, his wrestling promotion was donating 100% of all profits to a handful of great local charitable organizations. So I went. I may have gone grudgingly – but at least I went! All I wanted to do was crash when I arrived. Trust me, there is no direct flight to Kelowna, British Columbia. By the time I landed, I had been traveling for 11 hours. Knowing that I had 11 more hours on the way back - had me dreading, absolutely dreading the two days of shows, the return flight, and the full week of #HolyFoley filming to come. I absolutely, positively wanted to do nothing but sleep until the show that evening. But this Mike Chisholm can be a resilient fellow. Could I at least meet with one of the organizations they were donating to before I took my nap, he wanted to know. So I went to the Choices Market Food Drive for #MamasForMamas feeling exhausted. I returned feeling exhilarated. Meeting a real life superhero will do that to a guy. Shannon's dedication to those impacted or marginalized by poverty was inspiring to me. Hearing about the hardships that these families face – most of whom will never have a reality show to rush off to, a first class airplane seat to fly in, or an appearance of any type with their name on a poster, put into better perspective just how fortunate I am. I have been working on Long Island for 15 years with homeless children and families through #ChristmasMagic, but seeing the dedication and passion Shannon brought to her volunteer work made me want to do so much more. I made a donation to her group, and vowed never to complain about the small inconveniences in life – a promise I kept for almost two days! Shannon's dream is to one day talk about her passion for helping others on the #Ellen show. I don't know if Ellen is a Mick Foley fan, but please spread the word if you can. mick foley: STEPHANIE McMAHON: THE GIRL WITH THE SHY SMILE MICK FOLEY: THE GUY WITH THE TOOTH IN HIS NOSE MICK FOLEY THE McMAHON/FOLEY ERA I was absolutely elated following the opening of WWE Raw - an elation that had me looking back on the recent GM opportunity that was presented to me, as well as my long-term friendship with the woman who presented it to me, Stephanie McMahon. The initial phone call a few months back caught me completely off guard. Following the call, I walked downstairs, looked at my daughter Noelle Foley, and said "I was just offered the Raw GM job." "Are you going to take it?", Noelle asked. "I have to", I said. "Otherwise, I'll be sitting on the couch, watching someone else do the job, wondering to myself 'what if." There are two things you need to know that factored into my decision to take the GM job. 1) It's really important to me that I not be the guy sitting on my couch, saying "what if". 2) In regard to my time as WWE Commissioner in 2000, I'm going to quote #CruiserweightClassic stand-out Brian Kendrick quoting 80's hair-band Cinderella, who sang "Don't Know What You've Got Till It's Gone". My time as commissioner was one of the best periods of my life, and not doing whatever I needed to do to keep the job for as long as possible was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. I guess I should probably include a third factor: 3) I love working with Stephanie McMahon. In case you're wondering - the story of the girl with the shy smile/guy with the tooth in his nose is absolutely true. I was flattered that Pat Patterson included aspects of the story in his memoir "Accepted", and it is included in Stephanie's upcoming "unReal" as well. I was in pretty rough shape after that 1998 #HellInACell match, but I delayed medical care until I could find Pat Patterson who had lost a loved one during the course of the evening. I gave Pat a hug, noticed a beautiful young lady with a shy smile - and gave her what was probably a fairly hideous smile of my own. That was my unofficial introduction to Stephanie McMahon - WWE. A year and a half later, the beautiful young lady with the shy smile didn't seem quite so shy anymore; she was a force to be reckoned with in WWE and was a big part of the classic program I had with Paul "Triple H" Levesque to close out my career in early 2000. (Yeah, I know I came back four years later, and way too often after that – but let's not let the facts get in the way of a good story!)I truly enjoyed working with Stephanie when I was the commissioner in 2000, and I'm proud to say that I was the first on-air Stephanie McMahon slapping victim. I still remember my basic guidelines before the big slap - "you can hit me as hard as you want, but use your fingers instead of the palm, and try not to hit me in the ear, because you might break my eardrum." Over the years, I may have gone in and out of favor with the company, and my relationship with Mr McMahon has been strained at times - although it's getting much better. But there has never been a time when I have not considered Stephanie McMahon a friend. Back in 2000, my daughter Noelle was so fond of Stephanie, that she made her a pot-holder, which, rumor has it, still holds a place of distinction in the back of a drawer in the McMahon/Levesque home. That run in 2000 was really the last time I had any type of extended on-air role with Stephanie, although she continued to be an influence on my career - producing many of the segments from my 2004 return with Randy Orton and writing some of the best promos for my feuds with Edge and Ric Flair in 2006. I have also enjoyed joining Stephanie several times for visits with wounded service-members in Washington, DC where she serves on the board of directors for USO Metro-Washington. But what I was really looking forward to was that opportunity to work together again on-air, where I was sure we would bring out the best in each other. I think you saw some of that on Monday night – and hopefully not for the last time. Stephanie will sometimes mention that she "plays" a bad guy on TV. I don't think she's playing. I think she has that rare ability to inhabit a character, to the point where she becomes it - so that when she's good, she's really good; but when she's bad she's even better. The opening to #Raw on Monday felt important to both of us. For me, it was powerful, almost magical – the type of thing that made what had previously seemed like a random selection as GM in the minds of many fans suddenly make perfect sense. The type of thing that gets me excited about the future, might encourage WWE Superstars to take risks with their characters and spark new ideas among the creative team. It's the type of thing that makes me glad I'm not sitting on my couch every Monday, watching someone else as GM, wondering "what if". Have a nice day! If you like it, share it. I was hesitant to share it, because it feels a little bit like pointing to myself and saying "look at me!". But Julian Maha, the founder of #KultureCity, a remarkable and innovative #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance non-profit, encouraged me to share it, and Ms Colon said she would would be happy to have me share the letter if it might shine a more positive light on autism. I hope you enjoy it! I have to take a moment and speak about a man who today made such an impact on me and to whom I will forever be eternally grateful. Today I spent the afternoon waiting on a long line in the grueling heat with my children for 4 hours so they can meet WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley . We stood and watched as person after person walked up, spent a minute or so with him and posed for a picture in front of the table he was sitting behind. Finally, it was our turn to meet and Arianna begins to become nervous and shakey. Her anxiety of meeting someone new was kicking in and her eyes began to fill with tears. She suddenly was afraid and didn't want a picture. She just wanted to leave. I talk her down and she poses in front of the table just as the people before her. At that moment the unthinkable happens. This amazing man, leans in and kindly asks if she is on the spectrum (without saying those exact words but I knew what he was saying). I politely answer yes and explain how different Arianna is and how she finds comfort in hugging new people as a sort of way of introducing herself. He immediately says "I knew it! I sensed it. He points down to his bracelet that says Autism Awareness and says "Would it be okay if she hugged me?" I immediately began to tear up. He understood. He didn't give the dreaded "look" or get annoyed we were holding things up. When I asked Arianna if she wanted to hug him her face lit up and she said "YESSSSS". She jumped into his arms and hugged him. Played with his beard. Even asked where his Socko was. At that moment I began to silently sob. He got it. He knew and was without judgement and in complete understanding. He then takes even more time to write down the information he had about an organization he recommended I contact. At that moment he wasn't a celebrity. He was an understanding parent whom looked at my child and felt everything I felt. This is a moment that will stay in my heart. Because of him, my daughter has a memory that will never be shadowed by judgement and negativity. Instead, it was a day my 6yr old daughter will forever remember as "The day I met Mick Foley" I am happy to say that I will be meeting Ally and Arianna (who told her mom that I felt like "a fuzzy ball of rainbows") tomorrow for lunch in Brooklyn.
