In fact, according to the NY Times, back in 2016, the country released a draft law that would criminalize racism, meaning hate speech cases would go to criminal courts instead of civil and would be punishable by up to 10 years in prison. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since then, the nation has moved to implement the new rules and subsequently make an example of a white South African woman. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to CNN, Vicki Momberg was found guilty in November for crimen injuria, better known as the willful injuring of someone’s dignity in her racist verbal attack on a black police officer. The incident was caught on camera and quickly went viral. Since then, Momberg has been prosecuted and sentenced to three years in prison with one year suspended sentence, as she becomes the first South African to be jailed for the offense. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “We’ve had crimen injuria (cases before), but they have always been coupled by other charges. This is the first for a prison sentence for crimen injuria on its own,” a spokesperson said of the sentencing. “We are pleased with the sentence. This sends a clear message to those who undermine other people’s rights.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the incident that led to the sentencing, Momberg was caught on video hurling racial slurs at South African police officers after they stopped to help her after her car was broken into in Johannesburg. According to reports, she repeatedly used words that were used to insult black people during the apartheid. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now, Momberg will have two years behind bars to think about her actions.

Child Support, Fail, and Jail: Jay-Z and Roc Nation to Invest $3 Million in App That Combats Mass Incarceration @balleralert Jay-Z and Roc Nation to Invest $3 Million in App That Combats Mass Incarceration-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Jay-Z and Roc Nation will reportedly make a $3 million investment in an app called Promise, that combats mass incarceration. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ According to the website, the app was created by Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins and Diana Frappier to “get people out of jail and provide ongoing support and supervision to help keep them out.” The hope is that the platform will exist as an alternative to incarcerating individuals who cannot afford bail or who miss court dates by mistake. It will provide services to users that will help them log upcoming court dates, counseling appointments, and drug tests. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ When it comes to rehabilitation, Promise plans to provide programs to users that assist with job training and getting information about housing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ As a rapper, Jay-Z has used his platform to consistently speak about how the jail system is designed to fail those of low class and people of color. Last year the rapper wrote an opinion piece on Father’s Day about the exploitative bail industry. For many individuals, they are jailed due to their inability to afford bail, despite not being convicted of crimes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ During an interview with TechCrunch, Ellis-Lamkins spoke on the small infractions that lead to many people of color ending up behind bars. “People are going to jail because they look at a piece of paper and misread it, or are going to jail because they can’t afford a class because they’re instead paying child support. If we’re putting people in jail because they’re poor, brown or black, we’re spending money the wrong way.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “We are increasingly alarmed by the injustice in our criminal justice system,” Jay-Z said in a statement confirming his involvement with the app. “Money, time and lives are wasted with the current policies. It’s time for an innovative and progressive technology that offers sustainable solutions to tough problems. Promise’s team, led by Phaedra, is building an app that can help provide ‘liberty and justice for all’ to millions.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀

America, Children, and Dicks: We at DICK'S Sporting Goods are deeply disturbed and saddened by the tragic events in Parkland. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims and their loved ones But thoughts and prayers are not enough. We have tremendous respect and admiration for the students organizing and making their voices heard regarding gun violence in schools and elsewhere in our country. We have heard you. The nation has heard you We support and respect the Second Amendment, and we recognize and appreciate that the vast majority of gun owners in this country are responsible, law-abiding citizens. But we have to help solve the problem that's in front of us. Gun violence is an epidemic that's taking the lives of too many people, including the brightest hope for the future of America - our kids Following all of the rules and laws, we sold a shotgun to the Parkland shooter in November of 2017. It was not the gun, nor type of gun, he used in the shooting. But it could have been. Clearly this indicates on so many levels that the systems in place are not effective to protect our kids and our citizens We believe it's time to do something about it Beginning today, DICK'S Sporting Goods is committed to the following We will no longer sell assault-style rifles, also referred to as modern sporting rifles. We had already removed them from all DICK'S stores after the Sandy Hook massacre, but we will now remove them from sale at all 35 Field & Stream stores We will no longer sell firearms to anyone under 21 years of age We no longer sell high capacity magazines We never have and never will sell bump stocks that allow semi-automatic weapons to fire more rapidly . At the same time, we implore our elected officials to enact common sense gun reform and pass the following regulations: Ban assault-style firearms Raise the minimum age to purchase firearms to 21 Ban high capacity magazines and bump stocks .Require universal background checks that include relevant mental health information and previous interactions with the law Ensure a complete universal database of those banned from buying firearms Close the private sale and gun show loophole that waives the necessity of background checks We hope others join us in this effort to let our kids know that their pleas are being taken serioushy Some will say these steps can't guarantee tragedies like Parkland will never happen again They may be correct- but if common sense reform is enacted and even one life is saved, it will have been worth it We deeply believe that this country's most precious gift is our children.
