When I was a kid I loved the movie RAD. You remember, it was the one with the awesome BMX bikes. Anyways, I would sit around my room dreaming about having one of those bikes. I asked my mom & dad if they would buy me one and they quickly told me NO. They said if I wanted the bike I would have to buy it myself. . The thought of owning one consumed me so I hatched a plan to get me an exact replica of the movie bike. . Step 1 Convince my mom to front me $40.00 and take me to the store to buy bulk candy. Laffy Taffy, Suckers, Dip Sticks Ect. . Step 2 Take my backpack full of candy to school and sell it to all the kids for double what I paid. . Step 3 Pay my mom back her $40.00 and repeat until I had enough for the bike. . My little candy business took off more that I anticipated. It grew so fast that I had to hire other kids to work for me and help me sell the candy. Life was great & eventually I made enough money to buy the bike. So I bought the bike and every kid in my neighborhood envied my new bike. Especially Jason the neighborhood bully. . Well one day I came outside & my bike was gone. Jason had taken it and told me that it was now his bike. He Deebo'd my bike! And Jason was huge & one of the meanest kids around. I ran home crying & I told my mom that he stole my bike & that I needed her to buy me a new one. . She said "son...go outside and get back your bike and don't come home until you have it because if you allow them to take your bike and push you down and bully you...that for the rest of your life you will live remembering that they walked all over you and took what was rightfully yours." She then kicked me out of the house and forced me to go confront Jason. . And even though I was scared & hesitant (& I got my ass kicked) I got my bike back. It was the greatest lesson of my life because it taught me to stand up for myself and perceive each situation as an opportunity to grow. Like Jim Rohn once said..."You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself.  It's the public.
It's not the police who need to be retrained, it's the public. We have grown into a mouthy, cell phone wielding, vulgar, uncivil society with no personal responsibility and the attitude of 'it's the other person's fault', 'you owe me'. A society where children grow up with no boundaries or knowledge or concern for civil society and personal responsibility. Police officers are our sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters. They're black, white, brown, all colors, all ethnicities, all faiths, male and female, they are us. They see the worst side of humanity... the raped children, the bloody mangled bodies of traffic victims, the bruised and battered victims of domestic violence, homicide victims, body parts... day after day. They work holidays while we have festive meals with our families. They miss school events with their kids, birthdays, anniversaries, all those special occasions that we take for granted. They work in all types of weather, under dangerous conditions, for relatively low pay. They have extensive training, but they are human. When there are numerous attacks on them, they become hyper vigilant for a reason, they have become targets. When a police officer encounters any person... any person, whether at a traffic stop, a street confrontation, an arrest, whatever... that situation has the potential to become life threatening. You, Mr & MrsMiss Civilian, also have the responsibility of keeping the situation from getting out of control. Many law enforcement officers are Veterans. They've been in service to this nation most of their lives, whether on the battlefield or protecting us here at home. They are the only thing that stands between us and anarchy in the streets. They had long discourses and wrote theses and went to meetings. They were, in every sense, politicians. Electing Johnny Average with no formal political education, experience or training isnā€™t going to magically fix things.Ā </p>

<p>I think this is referring to career politicians; people whoā€™ve let the draw of being elected and given power change who they are. They HAVE become a caste, in that sense.</p>

<p>Even the term ā€œcareer politicianā€ I think is pretty meaningless. No one says ā€œew, I donā€™t want a *career doctor* operating on me! Heā€™s too used to the draw of performing successful surgeries and being paid handsomely for it! Iā€™d rather have the freshman med student do the job because he remembers what it was like to be like me!ā€</p><p>Thereā€™s really no great sin in making a ā€œcareerā€ out of what youā€™re good at. Thatā€™s why most positions have term limits and reelections. If people continue to elect you, then those people have said that they want you to continue doing the job. Again, itā€™s the people making the decision.
