Some context for the idiots claiming the women are overreacting:
This occurred at a Slut Walk. For those not familiar with it, the Slut Walk is basically a peaceful protest seeking to eliminate the rape apologism so prevalent in society. The basis is that no woman is “asking for it,” with “it” being rape. It’s not a feminist protest; it’s a human rights protest.
Many of the protesters, as you can probably imagine, have dealt with sexual harassment or rape in their own lives. Many of them have structured their daily activities to avoid being raped. The gathering is supposed to be a place for them to feel empowered and able to recover in the company of those who understand what they’ve been through or who will not blame them.
Nobody at a Slut Walk will tell a survivor that it’s her fault. They will not ask what she was wearing to provoke her attacker. Nobody will say she had too much to drink. Nobody will tell the men in the group that they are inherently rapists themselves, and nobody will tell a male survivor that his experience “wasn’t really rape.”
Then, this fellow comes along. He sees this gathering of survivors and their supporters, and to him, it’s a joke. He sees feminazis. He sees girls who are taking “a bit of fun” too seriously. And what does he do? He exposes himself to this group of survivors and supporters - some of whom are, in fact, underage.
He sexually harasses literally hundreds of women in one act. Aside from public indecency, there was cruel intent in his actions. He wanted to make them uncomfortable. He wanted to “put them in their place.” Other photos from this event show him flipping the protesters off and laughing at their anger.
And there are still people defending his actions. There are those who still feel like these women were asking for itand that they deserved to be harassed for trying to claim they weren’t. There are those who feel that women should be taught a lesson this way, and they applaud this man’s actions.
So no, he didn’t pull out his dick in front of feminist protesters. He harassed dozens - if not hundreds - of rape survivors. The reaction to his actions alone outline the purpose of the Slut Walk.
For those of you still doubting whether what he did was wrong (and I do wonder if there’s something wrong with you, if you have doubts), let me give you an analogous situation. Imagine a gathering of black civil rights activists. Imagine Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, and all their colleagues gathered together to demonstrate that being black did not make them lesser people. That being black and living in the South did not mean they were “asking” to be the target of hate crimes.
And at this gathering, a white man decides he should teach them a lesson by pointedly hanging a noose from the nearest tree and laughing at their anger. And other white men, laughing along with him, commend him for taking these activists down a peg.
That’s what happened here. It’s not an “OMG, I can’t believe he did that!” moment. It’s an “OMG, there are people who think this is okay” moment. And the fact is, it’s not. It never will be. And that’s the take home message of this ridiculous rant I’ve written up.

And this is why we still need feminism.

It’s like how bath towels in comics miraculously wrap completely around breasts. Or how even when injured and dead on the ground women in comics have to be twisted into “sexy” poses. Or how women in comics walk like they’re in high heels even barefoot. 
It’s the only way men know how to draw women, because to them female characters are only there to be sexy. They only think of “women” as exploitative costumes and camera angles, high heels and titillation. Sex objects to ogle, plot objects to further male heroes’ narratives and drama, not heroes to cheer for. 

I’m sorry, I was labouring under the impression that this was the crowd that thought women should wear what they want..?

And that applies to fictional women who are depicted by men how? You can’t apply agency in the plot to something metatextual when it comes to fictional characters. 

Come on, let’s not pretend this is a male exclusive thing.

We’re going to have this argument are we? Not to mention you’re deviating from the original point that attributing agency to fictional characters’ clothing is asinine. 
What you have here are images of power, and do you really believe these characters are designed with titillating heterosexual women and bisexual and homosexual men in mind? Because I don’t think you do.

Hurriyet Daily News reports that Albayrak had been hired to photograph the July 5th wedding at Turgut Özal Nature Park in the eastern Turkish province of Malatya. On the day of, when he noticed that the bride-to-be didn’t look like an adult, he asked the groom her age and learned that she was only 15.
“The groom had come to my studio some two weeks ago and was alone,” Albayrak tells the Daily News. “I saw the bride for the first time at the wedding. She’s a child, and I felt her fear because she was trembling.”
Albayrak then reportedly refused to continue as the wedding photographer and attempted to stop the wedding.



The argument soon turned physical when the groom attacked him as he was attempting to leave, Albayrak says. The photographer ended up breaking the client’s nose in the fight, according to local reports.
Albayrak confirmed the reports in a Facebook post, which has been met with widespread approval, attracting thousands of Likes and hundreds of overwhelmingly positive comments.


“I wish this had never happened, but it did,” Albayrak writes. “And if you were to ask me if I’d do the same thing again, I’d say ‘yes.’ Child brides are [victims] of child abuse and no power on earth can make me photograph a child in a wedding gown.”
The legal minimum age for marriage in Turkey is 18-years-old for both sexes, and child marriage is punishable by imprisonment for men who marry underage girls. Despite being outlawed, however, child marriage is still prevalent in the country and remains a controversial political issue.

btw - let’s remind ourselves, americans, that unlike turkey, in the US the legal minimum age for marriage is only 18 in two states. in alabama, you can be married as young as fourteen years old if you have “parental permission”. in california, you can get married under 18 if you go to counseling, have a parent with you when you apply for the marriage license, and appear before a judge. in some states, there isn’t even a specific minimum age for marriage.
the minimum marriage age for girls in new hampshire is 13 years old.
48 states allow child marriage.

Now I’m not a relationship expert, but I will never understand how some of y’all expect people to put you above the shit they have to do. Always put your career, your job, your livelihood first. This was all kinds of fucked up, really fucking abusive and manipulative, he should definitely go to LA with or without her.

 some help, sweetie" like stfu?? help? in this
 I honestly don't think they get it as a coping
 mechanism, they think it's a cry for help rather
 i'd even say it's past just coping and is also
 now a category of Stuff Kids Got Used To
 When No One Was Looking; not everyone
 using that humor is even covering up
 something bigger, we just stopped thinking
 along the line, and most parents don't seem

 Which really resonates with a lot of the things
 we say now when talking about people we
 find personally attractive, meaning not only is
 fatalism not a new trend, but those two girls
 at the starting sequence of Singing In The
 Rain are totally there for Lina, not Don
 So it's almost as if you can use fatalist
 humor as a sort of social atmosphere

So I used to make this joke all the time. Now I have chronic tinnitus. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s nerve damage in your ears which often comes as a result of being constantly exposed to very loud noise for a long period of time. The nerve damage results in a constant ringing/buzzing in your ears. So far there’s no cure. The severity of it varies, and I’m lucky to have a mild case, which I can barely hear during the day and is easy to block out at night. That said, loads of people with tinnitus aren’t so lucky. Severe tinnitus can’t be blocked out. Those who suffer from it also suffer from severe loss of sleep, depression, anxiety…. the list goes on. Tinnitus also comes with a degree of hearing loss in most cases, making it even harder to ignore. In fact, some people with severe tinnitus kill themselves just to make the ringing stop. Tinnitus can be so severe that it drives a person to suicide. Chronic tinnitus used to mostly be prevalent in older people who worked for years with loud machinery etc, but all of a sudden it’s becoming more common in our generation. Why? Because of people, like me, who listened to their music too goddamn loudly through their headphones.
Deaf by the time you’re 20? Please. That’s the least of your worries.

Chronic mild tinnitus here, too, due to too many metal concerts in my youth.  Turn your headphones down a little.  Wear earplugs at concerts.  Protect your ears.


Your eyes have an iris that can shrink down, and eyelids that can squint shut, to protect them from light that is too bright. Your ears have NOTHING to block out sounds that are too loud. It’s up to you.

Tinnitus sufferer from drumline in high school checking in. These days I wear earplugs at concerts, rehearsals,  clubs, and even movies sometimes.   Get yourself a set that look like these ones:

Etymotics Research was one of the first companies I’m aware of to widely market with this 
sort of ear plug, and they’re great, because they reduce noise fairly 
evenly across the spectrum, and so you hear everything accurately, just 
quieter.  While they’re certainly more expensive than the foam earplugs 
that you see everywhere, they also are washable and last for months and 
months, and sound great, if not better than without  for live music.  Please protect your ears.  There is no way to recover lost 
hearing.

you also might have even been “born” with this. a lot of people with sensory issues (especially autistic or ADD/ADHD people) experience this when it’s silent around them but havent actually hurt their ears with music at all.
so its also a sensory processing thing and you can be “born” with it (aka develop with it in childhood) like i have

normal people dont have that ringing noise. while it’s minor in cases of sensory development issues from developmental disorders, it can be severe if a person with a developmental disorder listens to loud music. i know that sometimes during a sensory overload from autism, the ringing will become terribly loud


Oh lord ok. Be careful with loud noises. Gotcha. I didnt realize not everyone hears that ringing. I thought it was normal so I never asked if anyone else heard it too. Thanks for the warning about loud music! Ive always tried to avoid going to concerts because of the ringing but I thought it was a thing everyone put up with and that I was being a wimp. Im glad I have an explanation!

When people talked about the sound of silence I thought that’s what they meant. But yeah I’ve had it for as long as I can remember.

the year is 2018- how am i getting this much use out of this photo? is there this much ambiguity about a basic craft which has been practiced before humanity figured out mud bricks that people are still confused about how sheep work?

A lot of people today have extremely limited understanding of how anything rural works, thinking only of animals in the abstract.
Hence people who don’t understand that cows can continue to give milk way longer than their calves need it, or that you don’t have to kill sheep to get their wool, or who think that a good way to save the bees is for everyone to stop eating honey.
Like, if people don’t want to eat meat because they don’t want animals killed, and want to avoid eggs because of the cruelty prevalent in that industry, or milk because yeah, there are a fair number of issues with the dairy industry too… I will support that 100%.
But then there are people so woefully misinformed I can’t take them seriously at all.

its baffling- if you assume wool requires a sheep to be killed, thus each sheep in its lifetime will only provide one ‘crop’ of wool, then how freaking expensive would you then assume yarn to be? youd assume mutton would then be exceedingly common in the meat market as wellthey make a logic tangent, and obviously abandon it two seconds after it passes where they want to go because thinking too hard will reveal that to be stupid

I have discovered that usually, the most militant and unpleasant vegans absolutely have no fucking idea how farming works. Ecological, sustainable farming - not massive, planet-damaging, animal-torturing industrial farming. If you don’t know that sheep have to be sheared before summer or they can literally die of heat, I am not going to listen to you. If you don’t realise that it only makes sense to use leather from animals if you kill them to eat them and that your vegan ass buying cheap plastic shoes three times a year is doing more damage to the environment than me buying leather shoes every five years, I’m not going to listen to you. If you refuse to consider that cows’ udders get painful if they don’t have a calf and aren’t milked, I won’t listen to you. And if you don’t have the basic biology knowledge required to realise that properly, sustainably raised farm animals have their place in the biosystem and that it would not, in fact, be a good thing to stop raising them, I am not going to listen to you. 

I was told by a vegan I am otherwise good friends with that “all farmers lie about everything to do with farming” and I just ???? do you have any idea how exhausting it is to fucking farm no one has the ENERGY to lie about stuff like “we need commercial bees as pass pollinators for fruit farms so you might as well eat honey tbh since they’re making an excess anyway”
by all means campaign for safer and better slaughterhouses (which btw is a current hot-button issue in the uk and is something one of my clients is backing and pursuing legally) and better animal welfare and make a point of pushing high-welfare products over shitty ones but demanding that everyone stops buying wool coats on the basis of a lie is stupid because the alternative is artificial fibres which are polluting the fucking oceans and killing off all the fish

This. We need to do better on animal welfare, as on so many things. the year is 2018- how am i getting this much use out of this photo? is there this much ambiguity about a basic craft which has been practiced before humanity figured out mud bricks that people are still confused about how sheep work?

A lot of people today have extremely limited understanding of how anything rural works, thinking only of animals in the abstract.
Hence people who don’t understand that cows can continue to give milk way longer than their calves need it, or that you don’t have to kill sheep to get their wool, or who think that a good way to save the bees is for everyone to stop eating honey.
Like, if people don’t want to eat meat because they don’t want animals killed, and want to avoid eggs because of the cruelty prevalent in that industry, or milk because yeah, there are a fair number of issues with the dairy industry too… I will support that 100%.
But then there are people so woefully misinformed I can’t take them seriously at all.

its baffling- if you assume wool requires a sheep to be killed, thus each sheep in its lifetime will only provide one ‘crop’ of wool, then how freaking expensive would you then assume yarn to be? youd assume mutton would then be exceedingly common in the meat market as wellthey make a logic tangent, and obviously abandon it two seconds after it passes where they want to go because thinking too hard will reveal that to be stupid

this episode literally scared the shit out of me as a child and to this day when people put raspberries in between their words it creates a sense of fear in me TO THIS DAY

Peak surreal horror genius. Something about the perpetually-missed bus adds so much dread… 


I know why! I remember a section in my hs sociology class that talked about this. 
Westerners have a tendency to adhere to a very strict schedule. We all do it. We get pissy when the bus or the subway is late. We get docked for punching in/out late. Westerners live their lives by timetables. Free time is frowned upon (something spawned from the colonial era and is why we have so many after school programs in America - idle hands, the devil, old white Christian men that had sticks up their asses blah blah). Children often feel guilty about missing school, even if they’re sick. Dreams about being late to something are more prevalent among westerners. And so on. 
This episode played on the fear of being late. Something as simple as missing the bus fills so many people with a dark dread in the pit of their stomach. The sociological definition of racism is power+prejudice; thus you can be prejudiced against someone, but without systemic power, it's not "racism" (it is still bad and wrong obviously). We use the sociological definition of racism, since sociologists study society and things like racism and discrimination 🙂 same reason we use scientific definitions for scientific phenomena and not just default to a basic general dictionary definition. If you are white and this upsets you, please think about history and the evolution of society. No one is saying white people have easy lives with no problems or that things are handed to you...just that racism is a SYSTEMIC issue that has to do with who has and has previously had power. And that ending slavery doesn't automatically make everyone equal. It's pretty easy to see that racism is still hugely prevalent today (look at the recent events in Charlottesville, the way people talk about people who are Muslim, the rhetoric around immigration, or anything Trump has ever said about any minority), so instead of debating about whether or not it was racist when a person of color was mean to you, why not focus on fixing these systemic issues and making the world a more equitable place for ALL people 🙃🙃🙃🙃. This was made known on Tuesday in Abuja when the World Bank Education Director, Dr Jaime Saavedra Chanduvi with his team visited the University as part of his assessment tour of the 10 African Centres of Excellence (ACE) centres. The World Bank has committed about $10 billion for the ACE project in Nigeria, as part of efforts to encourage conduct of cutting-edge research and specialisation of the beneficiaries institutions in specific development problems faced in Nigeria and indeed the African continent. AUST is hosting one of the Centres of Excellence, known as Pan African Material Institute (PAMI), with research focus electrical power, disease detection and treatment. Musujusu’s research, using macromolecular science is aimed at developing bio-degradable polymer material which could be used as alternative for the treatment of breast cancer in the near future. She revealed that her research focuses on triple negative breast cancer which is the aggressive sub-type of breast cancer that is common with women from African ancestry. Musujusu, a Sierra-Leonian national is conducting the research under the sponsorship of the Pan African Materials Institute (PAMI). Out of 19 African Centres of Excellence, 10 Nigerian tertiary institutions won slots to churn out special research works that could compete effectively with global standards. Colorism? Wow because the term “racism” is so blase.


pilambdaod Colorism specifically refers to people of their own race valuing lighter skin over darker skin. For example in latina culture, valuing “good” straight hair over “pelo malo” or bad, curly hair.
Racism would imply we’re talking about at least two different races here; colorism specifically is about racist ideals within one race, people of one race policing others appearance within their own race. 
(since this is an indian book, presumably made by indian people for indian children to read, depicting a light skinned indian woman as more beautiful than a dark skinned one, it’s colorism.)


One of those is clearly Caucasian the other Indian. 
Creating random new “isms” only makes legitimate grievances seem petty and stupid.

The 100 Years of Beauty: Philippines has a jarring jump where April Villanueva (who has light/medium-toned skin) gets her skin darkened for the 1910s-20s aesthetic, then becomes powder-white when US/European colonial interests make a stronger influence on Philippine society in the 1930s (more in the research video). 
Two more examples of skin tone variation between famous women in countries where colourism has become prevalent in celebrity culture (ie, it was a lot harder finding photos of a dark-skinned Korean actress than a light-skinned one): 
Koreans: Song Hye-kyo and Lee Hyori 
Filipinos: Valerie Garica and Nicole Scherzinger (active in the US; Filipino father, Hawaiian/Samoan-Russian mother) 
Variation in skin colour across a “race” is as real as variation in eye colour (”oh, you have brown eyes? I guess you’re not a real Caucasian”). 
Colourism also pervades a lot of modern beauty marketing. 
What’s underneath your dark skin? A prettier, lighter version of yourself! Everyone should strive to be more fair and lovely because only then you’ll be happy with your flesh prison!!

Colorism? Wow because the term “racism” is so blase.


pilambdaod Colorism specifically refers to people of their own race valuing lighter skin over darker skin. For example in latina culture, valuing “good” straight hair over “pelo malo” or bad, curly hair.
Racism would imply we’re talking about at least two different races here; colorism specifically is about racist ideals within one race, people of one race policing others appearance within their own race. 
(since this is an indian book, presumably made by indian people for indian children to read, depicting a light skinned indian woman as more beautiful than a dark skinned one, it’s colorism.)


One of those is clearly Caucasian the other Indian. 
Creating random new “isms” only makes legitimate grievances seem petty and stupid.

The 100 Years of Beauty: Philippines has a jarring jump where April Villanueva (who has light/medium-toned skin) gets her skin darkened for the 1910s-20s aesthetic, then becomes powder-white when US/European colonial interests make a stronger influence on Philippine society in the 1930s (more in the research video). 
Two more examples of skin tone variation between famous women in countries where colourism has become prevalent in celebrity culture (ie, it was a lot harder finding photos of a dark-skinned Korean actress than a light-skinned one): 
Koreans: Song Hye-kyo and Lee Hyori 
Filipinos: Valerie Garica and Nicole Scherzinger (active in the US; Filipino father, Hawaiian/Samoan-Russian mother) 
Variation in skin colour across a “race” is as real as variation in eye colour (”oh, you have brown eyes? I guess you’re not a real Caucasian”). 
Colourism also pervades a lot of modern beauty marketing. 
What’s underneath your dark skin? A prettier, lighter version of yourself! Everyone should strive to be more fair and lovely because only then you’ll be happy with your flesh prison!! 
tl;dr colourism exists and isn’t some bogeyman made up by “”es jay double-ews,”” and if you’re the person bemoaning how it “delegitimizes racism” then it’s likely you actually don’t care about racism at all and are just trying to devalue the arguments with the classic “but so-and-so people have it worse! how could you be so self-centered and selfish??”

Because the post doesn’t really explain, as a heads up the tick in question is the lone star tick. It’s a brown red tick with an iconic white dot on its back. Much bigger than a deer tick, it’s easier to spot but the above is true! A bite from a contaminated lone star tick can make you allergic to RED MEAT, so poultry and fish you’d still be good on. 
Have fun this tick season folks and remember to always always wear tick repellent if you’re going off the sidewalk into leaf litter or tall grass. Lyme disease isn’t any better at all and is more prevalent. Ticks are not fun!

 autism or add/adhd, which leads me to conclude, it comes from
 somewhere and must be related to something. Is it possible that it took

We’re very pleased to announce the titles of the articles for issue 7 of our quarterly magazine! As previously announced, the topic will be Bisexuality as part of our gender and sexuality series. Bisexuality is the most common identity in the LGBT community - with 5% of men, and 3 % of women identifying as bisexual (Kinsey Institute, 2007). Despite this however, bisexual’s still experience a lot of stigma and misunderstanding, and this comes from both within the LGBT community and outside of it (Roberts, Home  Hoyt, 2015). People who are bisexual experience the highest rates of violence, suicide, poverty and discrimination. 60% of bisexuals have experienced biphobia in the work place, and they are 6 times more likely to be closeted than homosexuals (Understanding Issues Facing American Bisexuals). There are many myths about bisexuality and people who are bisexual that feed into these high rates of violence and discrimination. Some of the most prevalent being that bisexuals are just greedy, confused or attention-seeking, the idea that polyamory and bisexuality are the same thing, the idea that they are immune to discrimination due to being “straight-passing”, the idea that bi-erasure is no big deal, and the idea that bisexuality is a phase.We believe that by raising awareness about bisexuality, issues that bisexuals face, and also how these myths are incorrect we can help tackle the core of what some bisexuals face. This is why we’ve decided on bisexuality for our awareness topic for this issue. We address some of these myths in our magazine - for example in the “Myths” section we explore the myth that bisexuality and polyamory are the same thing. In the LGBT section we explore the very real effects of bi-erasure. And in our Community Submission section we explore the effects stigma (such as biphobia) has on a person. We’re very pleased to announce the titles of the articles for issue 7 of our quarterly magazine! As previously announced, the topic will be Bisexuality as part of our gender and sexuality series. Bisexuality is the most common identity in the LGBT community - with 5% of men, and 3 % of women identifying as bisexual (Kinsey Institute, 2007). Despite this however, bisexual’s still experience a lot of stigma and misunderstanding, and this comes from both within the LGBT community and outside of it (Roberts, Home  Hoyt, 2015). People who are bisexual experience the highest rates of violence, suicide, poverty and discrimination. 60% of bisexuals have experienced biphobia in the work place, and they are 6 times more likely to be closeted than homosexuals (Understanding Issues Facing American Bisexuals). There are many myths about bisexuality and people who are bisexual that feed into these high rates of violence and discrimination. Some of the most prevalent being that bisexuals are just greedy, confused or attention-seeking, the idea that polyamory and bisexuality are the same thing, the idea that they are immune to discrimination due to being “straight-passing”, the idea that bi-erasure is no big deal, and the idea that bisexuality is a phase.We believe that by raising awareness about bisexuality, issues that bisexuals face, and also how these myths are incorrect we can help tackle the core of what some bisexuals face. This is why we’ve decided on bisexuality for our awareness topic for this issue. We address some of these myths in our magazine - for example in the “Myths” section we explore the myth that bisexuality and polyamory are the same thing. In the LGBT section we explore the very real effects of bi-erasure. And in our Community Submission section we explore the effects stigma (such as biphobia) has on a person. But for all this progress, some of the internet’s brightest promise is fading. The wide-open and whimsical frontier of the World Wide Web is being reshaped by strict, narrow platforms. Our pictures, videos, music, journals, articles, links, status updates, are spread across a dozen different networks—each specializing in a single medium. The infinitely expressive canvas of HTML has been eclipsed by directories of vanilla-white profile pages. Our digital identities are fractured and engineers make the rules.
Enter Tumblehub Tumblespot Tumblr, a modest solution inspired by an avant-garde community of bloggers calling themselves “tumbleloggers.” The premise, simply, to make space for each individual’s full range of expression. A median between the author’s unfiltered and editorial voice. With complete control over design and presentation, so anyone can create something that truly represents themselves and that is truly unique.

After four months of running my own blog on Tumblr, making tweaks and improvements, we open to the public. Hundreds of thousands of people begin using Tumblr to share some of the most eclectic, clever, and beautiful things we’ve ever seen on the internet.

Okay guys this is kinda important. GQ just came in the mail and for the first time in a long while it had a really important article…
I just sat here for like the last half hour reading this and I’m incredibly appalled at our justice system in regards to the military. The article interviews about 23 men who have all been sexually assaulted in some branch of the military. The PTSD from sexual assault in the military is more prevalent than PTSD from combat…
If you have a chance I suggest reading this article…and the title is a quote that one of the victims Doctor told him…

So, here it is!

Wow. Very powerful stuff. I’ve had quite a few friends from back home enter the military and this is never something we bring up in discussions. I’m glad it’s garnering more attention.

“The moment a man enlists in the United States armed forces, his chances of being sexually assaulted increase by a factor of ten. Women, of course, are much more likely to be victims of military sexual trauma (MST), but far fewer of them enlist. In fact, more military men are assaulted than women— nearly 14,000 in 2012 alone.”
“Military culture is built upon a tenuous balance of aggression and obedience. The potential for sexual violence exists whenever there is too much of either.”
“Trent Smith, Air Force, enlisted 2011: “He was a senior aide— he had a direct line to the top. Being invited voer to his house, I just took it as I should go. Looking back, I as myself, Why didn’t you do anything? It wasn’t like he held me down or tied me up. I didn’t want to cross him. I really didn’t feel like I had any choice. I had just turned 19. It could be my career. I froze and went along with it.”“
“Rsearch suggests that the military brass may have conspired to illegally discharge MST victims by falsely diagnosing them with personality disorders. “The military has a systemic personality disorder discharge problem,” write the authors of a 2012 Yale Law School white paper. It is likely that in many cases these were sham diagnoses meant to rid the ranks of MST victims.”
“Jeremy Robinson [name changed], Army, 1970-1972: “I have very little memory of my time in the psychiatric ward, because I was so heavily drugged. I stopped eating. I became suicidal, and I made three attempts. They gave me shock treatments against my will. The diagnosis was paranoid schizophrenia. I bore that label for forty years before the VA finally admitted they had misdiagnosed me.”“
“Above all, MST victins keep quiet because they do not believe their attackers will be punished. And they’re almost certainly right. The conviction rate in MST cases that go to trial is just 7 percent. An estimated 81% of male MST victims never report being attacked. Perhaps it should astonish us that any of them do.”

Okay guys this is kinda important. GQ just came in the mail and for the first time in a long while it had a really important article…
I just sat here for like the last half hour reading this and I’m incredibly appalled at our justice system in regards to the military. The article interviews about 23 men who have all been sexually assaulted in some branch of the military. The PTSD from sexual assault in the military is more prevalent than PTSD from combat…
If you have a chance I suggest reading this article…and the title is a quote that one of the victims Doctor told him…

So, here it is!

Wow. Very powerful stuff. I’ve had quite a few friends from back home enter the military and this is never something we bring up in discussions. I’m glad it’s garnering more attention. 

Some quotes:
“The moment a man enlists in the United States armed forces, his chances of being sexually assaulted increase by a factor of ten. Women, of course, are much more likely to be victims of military sexual trauma (MST), but far fewer of them enlist. In fact, more military men are assaulted than women— nearly 14,000 in 2012 alone.”
“Military culture is built upon a tenuous balance of aggression and obedience. The potential for sexual violence exists whenever there is too much of either.”
“Trent Smith, Air Force, enlisted 2011: “He was a senior aide— he had a direct line to the top. Being invited voer to his house, I just took it as I should go. Looking back, I as myself, Why didn’t you do anything? It wasn’t like he held me down or tied me up. I didn’t want to cross him. I really didn’t feel like I had any choice. I had just turned 19. It could be my career. I froze and went along with it.”“
“Rsearch suggests that the military brass may have conspired to illegally discharge MST victims by falsely diagnosing them with personality disorders. “The military has a systemic personality disorder discharge problem,” write the authors of a 2012 Yale Law School white paper. Between 2001 and 2010, some 31,000 servicepersons were involuntarily discharged for personality disorders. It is likely that in many cases these were sham diagnoses meant to rid the ranks of MST victims.”
“Jeremy Robinson [name changed], Army, 1970-1972: “I have very little memory of my time in the psychiatric ward, because I was so heavily drugged. I stopped eating. I became suicidal, and I made three attempts. They gave me shock treatments against my will. The diagnosis was paranoid schizophrenia. I bore that label for forty years before the VA finally admitted they had misdiagnosed me.”“
“Above all, MST victins keep quiet because they do not believe their attackers will be punished. And they’re almost certainly right. The conviction rate in MST cases that go to trial is just 7 percent. An estimated 81% of male MST victims never report being attacked. Perhaps it should astonish us that any of them do.”
“Mike Thomson, Marines, 1997-1999: ”I wasn’t “afraid” to report it— I was ashamed and disgusted. Guys aren’t supposed to be raped. I didn’t want to tell anybody about it. I didn’t want to say anything.”“
