Let’s see you little punks smash my letterbox now

This reminds me of this guy who used to live on my dad’s street.  

Every time it snowed, the snow plow would take out his mailbox - and only his mail box.  And just to be clear - it was done intentionally.  No one knows why, but the driver of the snow plow would target his box and mow it down.  He’d call the DOT to complain, and would get an earful of excuses that amounted to “not our fault you have a wimpy mailbox.”  

Fast forward to the next winter.  First decent snow starts falling, and every kid is hoping for a snow day.  It was right around 4:30 am that the whole neighborhood was woken up to this loud CLANG and the screech of tearing metal.  My dad made it to the window first and started laughing his ass off.

Sitting out side was one very totaled, and almost ripped in half, snow plow.  And these weren’t little pick-up trucks with a blade on the front, we have these up in NY:

Well, turns out over the summer, my dad’s neighbor got himself a backhoe and sank a steel I beam into the ground in his front yard.  Then he covered it with a decorative wood sleeve and topped it with a brand new mailbox.  When the snowplow driver tried to mow it down it was a bad case of immovable object meets unstoppable force - and the mailbox won.  With the plow firmly impaled on the I beam, it was very clear that the driver had gone out of his way to hit it.  

Naturally, the DOT wasn’t happy, and the neighbor’s reply was simple: “Not my faulty you have a wimpy snowplow.”  They did try to sue him for the damages, but as he had gone to the town, gotten approval for the post and its installation, and made sure everything was up to code, it was thrown out pretty quick.  

And for anyone wondering about the driver…  He was fine.  His job and tighty-whiteys … not so much.

 One of my favourite Steve Jobs stories was the time the engineers
 working on the iPod brought their finished prototype to him in his office. He
 said it was too big, they needed to make it smaller. They said it was as
 small as they could make it, it couldn't be made any smaller. So he took
 the prototype over to his aquarium and dropped it in. The iPod sank to the
 bottom, and as it did, tiny little bubbles came out. 'See those bubbles,' he
 asked. 'They're air inside the iPod. Make it smaller.
 "Another story about Steve Jobs was when they brought the prototype for
 the iPad 2 to his office. The engineers told him it was faster than the first
 iPad. He took it over to his aquarium and dropped it in. Look how slowly it
 sank, he told them. Make it faster
 One time a newly hired intern had been sent out to get Steve a sandwich.
 When she brought it to him, he looked at it. 1 thought I ordered the beef on
 rye," he asked. She told him it was indeed beef on rye. He took it over to
 his fish tank and dropped it in. "Does that look like beef on rye?'
 He was always dropping things in that fish tank. We couldn't stop him. We
 told him he had to stop, he wouldn't listen. It was full of stuff that shouldn't
 be in an aquarium.
 The fish had all died years ago. One had been crushed under an early
 generation iMac. The others were all poisoned. He didn't care
 It got to the point where there was no room for anything in the fish tank.
 When we emptied it after he died, we found a body in there. We never
 found out who it was."

idk how the hell i’ve run a blog called ‘botanyshitposts’ for almost four years now without ever thinking to talk about this but in high school my little brother wanted a pet that wouldnt die so we got him a moss ball for $8 at a pet store and he named it tiki and it lives in this dedicated plastic tank at our parents’ house even though we’re both at college now. usually it doesnt do anything but over the past two weeks of winter break our family has watched in horror as it has gone about the process of slowly and ominously rising from its usual position at the depths of its abode to the top, where it now floats with gravel bits stuck to it from literal years of not moving. my mom has moved it to behind the sink so now whenever i go to wash my hands in the kitchen i have to face it and im scared
just squeezed all the water out of her like yall said in the replies and i put her back and shes still floating….maybe she just likes it up there


update: she sank to the bottom and stayed there for days and i thought this story was over until i WALKED OVER TO THE SINK JUST NOW

 intensifled into an extremely dangerous hurricane, with 30-second
 GOES-16 visible imagery showing well-defined eyewall mesovortices
 rotating inside of the eye. A NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft found
 peak SFMR winds of about 120 kt, with flight-level winds and
 dropsonde measurements also supporting that value for the initial
 wind speed estimate. Notably, the aircraft data also show the size
 of the hurricane-force winds has doubled in the past 12 hours

This is from the forecast discussion of Major Hurricane Florence from this afternoon. As a meteorologist, when I saw this, my heart sank. They don’t use wording like this for every storm.
Florence is going to be a devastating. There will be huge amounts of flooding, both from inland rain and from costal storm surge. Winds are going to be some of the strongest you can get from a hurricane. People within the path of this storm could lose everything.
If you know anyone who lives on the North or South Carolina coast, tell them that if there’s an evacuation ordered, they need to get the hell out. Do not take chances with this one.


Reblogging again to add a list of things/essentials from a friend who lives on the NC coast and has weathered hurricanes and other bad weather:

- toiletries (paper towels, toilet paper, baby wipes for “bathing” in case power  water go out)
- water, 1 gallon per person for at least 7 days (err on the side of caution if possible); more if you have animals!!
- non perishable food items, if you get canned food make sure you have a can OPENER
- pet food  supplies, if you’re really worried about flooding it may be beneficial to get life vests for your pets, also find a way to put identification information on them! 
- batteries
- flashlights
- battery packs for cell phones charged up in case of loss of power
- filled cars with gas  filled gas can(s)
- get all essentials like passports, important docs, and cherished items together  ready to go 
- just in case, determine a way to get onto your roof safely
- fill bathtubs with water so if water isn’t available you can refill the toilets to keep flushing and keep waste to a minimum
- if you have dogs look up how to make a makeshift potty, you can use a hard baby pool and some sod potentially 
- check your prescriptions and get them refilled now if necessary
- if you’re taking insulin and lose power, fill a separate cooler for your insulin than the one you would use for food. Insulin  food
If your place begins to flood get the hell OUT of the water!!! There is no telling if you have a live electrical charge in there! 
Do not cross any water you cannot see the bottom of the ground in. I’m serious.

 I bought it for a 4th of July party, thinking it would be a fun gag shirt. Little did I know. I pulled it out
 of the box and immediately sank to my knees and wept tears of pure joy, and by "pure joy" I mean
 pure Jack Daniel's" I strapped it on and my max bench press increased by a 100lbs. I wiped the
 whiskey from my face, looked in the mirror, and in my reflection I saw him behind me
