Board of Education Case Ended Segregation in Schools, Dies Rest in Power, LindaBrown! 💓✊🏾🙇🏾‍♀️ • • • Linda Brown Thompson, who as a young girl was the student at the center of the landmark Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education that declared school segregation unconstitutional, has died in Topeka, Kansas. She was 76. The Peaceful Rest Funeral Chapel in Topeka confirmed it is handling funeral arrangements for Brown. Born in 1943, Brown was in third grade in 1950 when she was denied admission to an all-white elementary school in her hometown of Topeka. She lived 20 blocks from her segregated school, but just five blocks from the all-white school. Kansas schools at the time were segregated by state law. Brown's father, Rev. Oliver Brown, sued the school district in 1951. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) took up the case, which was combined with segregation suits against school districts in other states when it came before the Supreme Court. Future Supreme Court justice ThurgoodMarshall was the lead attorney for the NAACP. In a unanimous ruling in 1954, the court declared school segregation an unconstitutional violation of the 14th Amendment's guarantee of equal protection under the law. The ruling, written by Chief Justice Earl Warren, struck down the "separate but equal" doctrine that had served as the basis for segregation of public facilities since the 1896 case Plessy v. Ferguson. "Sixty-four years ago a young girl from Topeka brought a case that ended segregation in public schools in America," Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer told the Topeka Capital-Journal. Chicago, Children, and cnn.com: CNN Live TV US Army veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan has been deported to Mexico By Theresa Waldrop, CNN Updated 7:47 PM EDT, Sun March 25, 2018 “A US Army veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan has been deported to Mexico, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said. . . Perez, 39, was escorted across the US-Mexico border from Texas and handed over to Mexican authorities Friday, ICE said in a statement. . . Perez, his family and supporters, who include Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, had argued that his wartime service to the country had earned him the right to stay in the United States and to receive mental health treatment for the PTSD and substance abuse. . . "This case is a tragic example of what can happen when national immigration policies are based more in hate than on logic and ICE doesn't feel accountable to anyone," Duckworth said in a statement following reports of Perez's deportation. "At the very least, Miguel should have been able to exhaust all of his legal options before being rushed out of the country under a shroud of secrecy." . . I am going to have the neighborhood meet these hoodlums out here racing up and down the street,” Chad Copley said to the emergency operator. “It’s 1 in the morning. There’s some devil in them. They have firearms and we’re going to secure our neighborhood. If I was you, I would send PD out here as quickly as possible,” later adding, “I’m going to kill them.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After his conversation with the 911, Copley fired his gun and struck 20-year-old KourenRodneyBernardThomas. He then redialed 911 to explain the incident, claiming one of the boys brandished a gun. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, upon arrival, officials found an unarmed Thomas with a gunshot wound. He was quickly taken to a local hospital, where he was then pronounced dead. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Shortly after the incident, Thomas’ friend explained that their actions were innocent and completely opposite of Copley’s claims. In fact, David Walker said he and Thomas tried to get into a party on Copley’s block, but when they couldn’t get immediate access, they decided to leave. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While Walker’s story was slightly different from Copley’s, the end result was the same-Thomas was shot. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ During the trial, Copley, who the family attorney named ‘George Zimmerman 2.0’, maintained he fired in self-defense against the group of armed men. However, after a cross-examination, Copley admitted that he saw no gun and that there wasn’t even a neighborhood watch. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As a result, Copley was found guilty on first-degree murder charges and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Her role as “Mammy” in the film “Gone With The Wind” earned her the Oscar for “Best Supporting Actress” in 1940. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Despite the film’s success and eight Oscar Awards, McDaniel, along with the rest of her black castmates weren’t allowed at the premiere of the film in Georgia. The color of her skin also caused for McDaniel to not be allowed to sit with the rest of the nominated cast at the Oscar Awards, but allowed her a seat in the back of the venue. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to Variety, producers of the film, AaronMagnani and AlysiaAllen got their hands on the rights to Jill Watts’ published biography, “Hattie McDaniel: Black Ambition, White Hollywood” to help them with the film. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Though people in the black community criticized her for playing roles that they felt fed into racial stereotypes for African Americans, McDaniel served as a pioneer and example for aspiring African American actors and actresses for generations to come. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Considering the fact that the first black man to receive a golden globe for best actor in a TV series happened just a week ago, this biopic is a big deal, and long overdue. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Continue to rest in peace Ms. McDaniel and congratulations.

California Governor Pardons Two Immigrants Caught in Raids in Huge Middle Finger to Trump splinternews.com Cc @realdonaldtrump 🖕🏽🖕🏼🖕🏿🖕🏾 As part of his annual holiday pardons, the governor of California pardoned two immigrants who were arrested in immigration raids earlier this year. Gov. Jerry Brown recently pardoned or reduced sentences for some 150 individuals convicted of crimes. Among those pardoned were Rottanak Kong and Mony Neth, two Cambodian refugees facing deportation who were recently arrested as part of a federal immigration roundup. The “full and unconditional pardons” for Kong and Neth comes as the Trump administration justifies increased immigration enforcement by claiming immigrants who have been convicted of crimes, even nonviolent offenses, pose an immediate danger to American citizens and should be targeted for deportation. But Brown said Kong and Neth have already served their time and paid their debts to society, essentially saying the two immigrants don’t need to be doubly punished by being deported. Kong and Neth’s pardons mark the second time Gov. Brown has pardoned immigrants convicted of serious crimes, according to The Sacramento Bee. So far, an immigration judge has allowed one of those veterans the rare right to return the United States after being deported. Source: Splinter
