Sebab Cachtice ini dulunya menjadi saksi bisu pembantaian ratusan gadis muda oleh seorang bangsawan kejam. Kastil yang berdiri sejak abad ke-13 ini disebut-sebut menjadi salah satu tempat pembantaian manusia paling mengerikan di dunia. Dulu ada seorang bangsawan wanita bernama Elizabeth Bathory yang menetap di kastil Cachtice pada akhir abad ke-15 hingga awal abad ke-16. Wanita ini juga menganut paham pemuja setan dan ilmu sihir. Saat Elizabeth memasuki usia 40 tahun, dia mulai khawatir kecantikannya akan pudar dan takut suaminya akan meninggalkannya karena kulitnya mulai keriput. Dia kemudian mulai mencari gadis-gadis muda untuk memuaskan kebiasaannya. Setelah mencari para gadis malang, dia mengikat mereka di atas bak mandi. Dengan sadis, Elizabeth menyayat urat nadi mereka dan darah segar yang mengucur ke dalam bak mandi digunakannya untuk mandi. Elizabeth yang telah kehilangan akal sehat itu beranggapan bawha mandi darah akan membuatnya tetap cantik dan awet muda.
