I don’t like the phrase “a cry for help.” I just don’t like how it sounds. When somebody says to me, “I’m thinking about suicide. I have a plan: I just need a reason not to do it,” the last thing I see is helplessness.
I think your depression has been beating you up for years. It’s called you ugly, and stupid, and pathetic, and a failure, for so long that you’ve forgotten that it’s wrong. You don’t see any good in yourself, and you don’t have any hope.
But still here you are: you’ve come over to me, banged on my door and said, “HEY! Staying alive is REALLY HARD right now! Just give me something to fight with! I don’t care if it’s a stick! Give me a stick and I can stay alive!”
How is that helpless? I think that’s incredible. You’re like a marine: trapped for years behind enemy lines. Your gun has been taken away, you’re out of ammo, you’re malnourished, and you’ve probably caught some kind of jungle virus that’s making you hallucinate giant spiders.
And you’re still just going, “GIVE ME A STICK. I’M NOT DYING OUT HERE.”“A cry for help” makes it sound like I’m supposed to take pity on you, but you don’t need my pity. This isn’t pathetic. This is the will to survive. This is how humans lived long enough to become the dominant species.
With NO hope, running on NOTHING, you’re ready to cut through a hundred miles of hostile jungle with nothing but a stick, if that’s what it takes to get to safety.
All I’m doing is handing out sticks.
You’re the one saying alive.

Every time I see this post I stop to read the whole image.  It always helps — even on the good days.  
Because it wasn’t weakness.  It wasn’t shameful to seek help.  It wasn’t pathetic to “cry for help”.  I was looking for a stick, be that from myself or from someone else.  I was trying to find a way out. I was trying to heal myself.

I don’t like the phrase “a cry for help.” I just don’t like how it sounds. When somebody says to me, “I’m thinking about suicide. I have a plan: I just need a reason not to do it,” the last thing I see is helplessness.
I think your depression has been beating you up for years. It’s called you ugly, and stupid, and pathetic, and a failure, for so long that you’ve forgotten that it’s wrong. You don’t see any good in yourself, and you don’t have any hope.
But still here you are: you’ve come over to me, banged on my door and said, “HEY! Staying alive is REALLY HARD right now! Just give me something to fight with! I don’t care if it’s a stick! Give me a stick and I can stay alive!”
How is that helpless? I think that’s incredible. You’re like a marine: trapped for years behind enemy lines. Your gun has been taken away, you’re out of ammo, you’re malnourished, and you’ve probably caught some kind of jungle virus that’s making you hallucinate giant spiders.
And you’re still just going, “GIVE ME A STICK. I’M NOT DYING OUT HERE.”“A cry for help” makes it sound like I’m supposed to take pity on you, but you don’t need my pity. This isn’t pathetic. This is the will to survive. This is how humans lived long enough to become the dominant species.
With NO hope, running on NOTHING, you’re ready to cut through a hundred miles of hostile jungle with nothing but a stick, if that’s what it takes to get to safety.
All I’m doing is handing out sticks.
You’re the one saying alive.

Every time I see this post I stop to read the whole image.  It always helps — even on the good days.  
Because it wasn’t weakness.  It wasn’t shameful to seek help.  It wasn’t pathetic to “cry for help”.  I was looking for a stick, be that from myself or from someone else.  I was trying to find a way out. I was trying to heal myself.

 IT'S CALLED YOU UGLY, AND STUPID, AND PATHETIC, AND A FAILURE,

 protest & l accidentally ended up outing
 myself to the rest of my family on live tv
Why you shouldn't kill yourself: (This event actually happened to me, so I'm not just making it up) About one year ago, my best friend for over 10 years tried to kill themselves. It seemed out of nowhere. One day they just didn't show up to school and then the next day and then the next. I got worried. I decided to ask their grandparents what happened. After a day, they admitted that my best friend tried overdosing. I ran outside and collapsed to the ground and I was bawling. My best friend would have left me alone. I wouldn't have them anymore. I loved them as my own sibling. Them...trying to kill themselves...I went to school the next day and told everyone that they were sick and that we should make a giant card for when they get back. I think they still have it, but I have it to them when they returned from the mental hospital. I cried when they came back. They thought that no one would miss them. Not a single person. But I got more people to sign the card than you would think. I still love them dearly. They are still my best friend. Actually, their birthday is next Tuesday and I'm so glad they stay alive for another year. They truly mean so much to me. Don't kill yourselves. A lot of well-off people look at poor people with mistrust. They assume that people asking for money on the streets are delinquents or thieves on the lookout for anything they can get their hands on. But in truth, people living in poverty often turn out to be more generous and empathic than those who live comfortable lives. An example of this is a little boy named John Thuo. He lives in Nairobi, Kenya, where like many other poor kids, he used to beg for money on the streets. John Thou used to spend his days on the streets of Nairobi, Kenya begging for money. It's something that irrates many drivers, because they assume that the beggers are most likely thieves. However, John Thuo proved that he's not only not a thief, but he also has a heart of gold. One day, the boy was out begging when he approached a car to ask for money. But when he looked inside, John was struck by something unusual he saw. The driver of the car was hooked up to tubes and breathing oxygen out of a tank. The woman's name is Gladys Kamande. She's 32 years old, and she explained to John that her lungs had collapsed, so she couldn't breathe properly and had to carry the oxygen tanks with her in order to stay alive. John was shocked to realize that in spite of his poverty, there are people in the world who are worse off than he is—because they don't even have their health. Moved to tears, John offered Gladys all the money that he'd taken in that day and held her hand through the window. A passerby noticed the incident, took some photos, and told the story on the internet. And within a few days, the story had gone viral and triggered a a chain of events that would change both John and Gladys' lives forever. After Gladys' story spread, thousands of donations poured in. In total, kindhearted strangers contributed $80,000 to enable her to travel to India and receive treatment. And how is John doing? Well, after all of the attention he received on social media, he was finally rescued from the streets and adopted into a loving home. The woman who adopted him, Nissy Wambugu, also gave him the opportunity to start studying!
