She was very scared but thankfully went easily with them. Big thanks to local PR rescue Defensa Animal who then assisted with getting Flaca her initial medical treatment. She was diagnosed with anemia, demodex mange, she was extremely malnourished and horribly emaciated. It's been a long haul but this angel has come so far!! She has gained healthy weight and her skin condition is under control. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_House soiling—Melon is noted to have occasional accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. She is also noise-phobic and has built negative associations with noises outside, which may be a challenge for walking. We recommend a harness, a very slow re-exposure to being outside, and use of high-value rewards to build positive associations. The help of a qualified trainer for desensitization and counterconditioning may be needed. We recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based, positive reinforcement training methods as more aversive methods are likely to quickly and severely increase Melon’s already high levels of fear and may push her to escalate her warning signs. _X_Resource guarding- Potential resource guarding was noted in the previous home as Melon was observed to growl when engaged with items when attempting to remove them. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from Melon’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. _X_Kennel presence-When attempting to remove Melon from her kennel she displayed fearful behavior, she began to growl, leap forward in attempts flee, and grab the rope. She continued to hard bark, and bare teeth. While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Melon may show behavior similar to what she is currently demonstrating in her kennel. We recommend potential adopters be comfortable managing this behavior and keeping themselves safe in any similar future situations. Only force-free, reward based, positive reinforcement is recommended as more averse techniques can elicit a negative reaction and response. The environment should also be managed by being placed in a home without cats or other small animals. Socialization: According to the owner, around strangers Jada will bark and show teeth at first but after a few minutes, she will settle and become friendly. Around adults & children Jada will play very rough. Jada has lived with children ages 16,11,7 years of age and would hard bark at the children. Owner also had children ages 3 & 5 in the house but would not let Jada associate with them as she would lunge after them. For this reason we recommend an adult only home at this time. _X_No cats/small animals – Jada has shown a high prey drive toward the resident cat and small dog. It is recommended Jada be taught default behaviors such as ‘leave it’, ‘sit/stay’, and ‘down’ to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting. Only force-free, reward based, positive reinforcement is recommended as more averse techniques can elicit a negative reaction and response. The environment should also be managed by being placed in a home without cats or other small animals. Potential challenges: _X_House soiling – Owner reports Jada may have occasional accidents in the home. Crate training was attempted but Jada would rip apart things while inside the crate. She will need guidance and consistency to learn to always eliminate outside. We recommend continuing crate training, but supplying the crate with very high value enrichment items such as stuffed kongs and frozen beef marrow bones to eliminate anxiety and provide a positive association to the crate- never used as a punishment.
