Matt Lauer, host of NBCโ€™s The Today Show, was the latest to fall into this trap as he tried to AMBUSH the owner of the New England Patriots following their Super Bowl win. Patriots owner Robert Kraft sat with Lauer to talk about his teamโ€™s stunning comeback victory over the Atlanta Falcons. But Lauer wanted to talk about how a number of Patriots players will not join the rest of the team in visiting the White House, as is tradition for the Super Bowl victors. Lauer, like most of the liberal media, wants to believe thatโ€™s because those players simply cannot stand to be in the presence of President Trump. And given that Kraft is a long-time friend of Trumpโ€™s, Lauer was certain that makes it hard for him to manage players who donโ€™t like the president. โ€œHas your relationship with Donald Trump in any way strained your relationship with some of your players, who by the way, some say they donโ€™t want to go to the White House to celebrate this win?โ€ he asked smugly. Kraftโ€™s response was PERFECT. โ€œEvery time weโ€™ve had the privilege of going to the White House, a dozen of our players donโ€™t go,โ€ Kraft said. โ€œThis is the first time itโ€™s gotten any media attention.โ€ The Patriots won the Super Bowl three times during the Bush Jr. presidency and once during Obamaโ€™s time in office. Each of those times, a number of players missed the White House visit. And the media said nothing about it. Either that fact simply slipped Lauerโ€™s mind, or this is the measure of โ€œprofessionalโ€ journalism these days. Good thing Kraft was there to set him straight."

The number of New England players saying theyโ€™ll skip the traditional championsโ€™ visit to the White House is now up to six, and may get larger. Defensive end Chris Long, running back LeGarrette Blount and defensive tackle Alan Branch added their names to the list Thursday, joining tight end Martellus Bennett, defensive back Devin McCourty and linebacker Dontโ€™a Hightower as having publicly stated an intention not to accompany the team on its expected trip to Washington later this year. Some, but not all, of the six players cited an antipathy to President Trump as their reason. It is even possible that an invitation from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. wonโ€™t be extended to New England at all, despite the ties to Kraft, Brady and Belichick, if enough players stage a boycott and Trumpโ€™s own team decides that the optics would be bad for him.
